WASHINGTON (AP) Dick Cheney said Sunday that Republicans need to look to a new generation of leaders as the party deals with poor approval ratings following the government shutdown.
The former vice president said Republicans have faced challenges before and its healthy for the party to work to rebuild.
The GOP got whipped in the 2012 presidential campaign, when President Barack Obama won re-election over Mitt Romney, and the party needs to build its base of supporters and find first-class candidates and turn to a new generation of leaders, Cheney told ABCs This Week.
Its not the first time we have had to go down this road and its basically, I think, healthy for the party to be brought up short, say, OK, now its time to go to work, Cheney said.

I agree with you 100%!!
I do think that his health wasn't very good for a while. He struggled with heart problems
He's from Nebraska. Maybe that state just wasn't large enough to put forth a POTUS.
From the Internet: New book by former vice president and his cardiologist chronicles his decades of health problems, resulting in a heart transplant last year.
In a short sentence, why would they? We’re a psychotic friend, changing moods even few years.
I’m sure our allies trust us as much as the Iraqis that backed us in Desert Storm trust us. We left them in the lurch due to our own internal idiocy and they were massacred for it.
Obama is president because of the failures of Bush/Cheney
Cheney is part of the problem. One half of the disastrous Bush/Cheney team that brought us the biggest deficits ever until that time, and biggest economic downfall since the Depression. He has his billions. Can’t he just go away?
Cheney has said in the second term he disagreed with bush on almost every matter of state. But I must agree with you that I don’t think he is as conservative as we here at FR.
That's all on Bush/Cheney. Bush meant well, but he was a terrible war president. And Cheney, he just likes to talk tough and pretend that he is a cowboy.
Bush was bad in the first term too. Ever hear of Medicare expansion and Bush/Kennedy education “reform”?
And, frankly, how’s that Iraq invasion working out for you?
Cheney was right there next to Bush on all these “triumphs”
Only partially.
The whole thing cannot be laid at Bush-Cheney’s feet.
Much of the blame goes to the GOP and bad choices to run against Obama, also the race issue, so many were so anxious to see the First Black President.
I hope they have now had a good look.
I agree, bush was anything but conservative.
My agreement is with the headline. No more!
