Why Texas Is Our Future (Hurl-tastic)
Time Magazine ^ | October 28, 2013 | Tyler Cowen

Posted on 10/27/2013 4:12:52 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

They say the Lone Star State has four seasons: drought, flood, blizzard and twister. This summer 97% of the state was in a persistent drought; in 2011 the Dallas-Fort Worth area experienced 40 straight days in July and August of temperatures of 100° or higher. The state's social services are thin. Welfare benefits are skimpy. Roughly a quarter of residents have no health insurance. Many of its schools are less than stellar. Property-crime rates are high. Rates of murder and other violent crimes are hardly sterling either. So why are more Americans moving to Texas than to any other state? Texas is America's fastest-growing large state, with three of the top five fastest-growing cities in the country: Austin, Dallas and Houston. In 2012 alone, total migration to Texas from the other 49 states in the Union was 106,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Since 2000, 1 million more people have moved to Texas from other states than have left.

As an economist and a libertarian, I have become convinced that whether they know it or not, these migrants are being pushed (and pulled) by the major economic forces that are reshaping the American economy as a whole: the hollowing out of the middle class, the increased costs of living in the U.S.'s established population centers and the resulting search by many Americans for a radically cheaper way to live and do business.

To a lot of Americans, Texas feels like the future. And I would argue that more than any other state, Texas looks like the future as well — offering us a glimpse of what's to come for the country at large in the decades ahead.....

Not to worry. Neither of Time’s readers are technically (or anything else) literate.

Only on the coast. Been here for 46 years and will never leave. Had a great time helping elect Cruz and can’t wait to dump Cornyn.

Texas is a huge state. It’s humid in some places, like Houston. I’m up in Denton, which isn’t so bad. Can get hot, but that’s what air conditioning is for. We run it all the time when it’s hot and our power bill is reasonable.

Really, Yankees and Californians, Texas is even worse than reported by Time.

True, the weather is awful, but so is everything else. The welfare system here is atrocious and it is a right-to-work state. There are no income taxes, so social services are sadly deficient. They actually expect immigrants to earn their own living. And don’t get me started on how the state refuses to honor gay rights and abortion rights. There’s church on every corner, and many Texans still say “Bless you!” when you sneeze and “Merry Christmas” during the winter holidays. Most Texans are too stupid to understand that free enterprise is a horrible economic system, and they voted against Obama in 2008 and 2012.

Texas is really horrible, Yankees and Californians. Please stay away for your own good. Don’t even visit, much less consider moving here.

I've been to Texas a few times and I really like the super wide highways and all the great steakhouses. It might be hot as hell but it sure feels good to walk into one of those air-conditioned steakhouses for a big juicy porterhouse along with a few mugs of cold beer.

Some of those joints even have sawdust on the floor and one of those mechanical bulls in the back. I keep expecting to see somebody that looks like John Travolta riding it.

Two things:
1. I’m sure the Liberals dream of turning Texas into a blue state. If they can do that, it’s game over.
2. I will never live in Texas.

Same reason I’ll never move to Florida: I’m partial to four seasons.
