A new report shows that 20 percent of Jewish households in the New York metropolitan area are poor, a figure only marginally lower than the rate in the general population.
The report released Thursday by UJA-Federation of New York found more than 560,000 people living in 200,000 poor or near-poor Jewish households, a figure that represents a doubling of the number of people living in poor Jewish households since 1991, despite only a 14 percent increase in the Jewish population. The report also found nearly half of children in Jewish households live in poor or near-poor conditions.
Among all residents of the New York area, some 25 percent live in poor households, the report said.
The sheer scale of Jewish poverty in the New York area is immense, and the Jewish community has a sacred responsibility to care for those in need, said John Ruskay, UJA-Federations executive vice president and CEO.

“NYC has always been a hot house for communism AND NYC Jews were mostly supportive of communism”
The poor are almost all Orthodox who are newish immigrants and vote Republican and share your beliefs regarding government.
The solution is to leave the blue cities, but that is a scary move for a lot of Jewish people who have known little else.
I’m not Jewish and don’t know much about New York but did work temp contracts in many offices for over a decade, mostly during the ‘90s. The experience was enlightening. Extremely libertine social and fiscal policies were the norm (pathological policies, in my opinion). The situation is obviously much worse more recently.
Conservatism would be detrimental to most people trying to work for incomes from government-linked business or government: the general composition of the collapsing debt regime, where production of useful things outside of commodities production are, in effect, outlawed by regulations and prevented by government-assisted anti-competition policies in most locales.
Lefty is far more likely to be successful at receiving a great income now. That may not be the case during economic rebuilding after the end of the default process. How many people are really producing anything useful outside of commodities now? Not nearly enough of the population, in my opinion.
Such activities in new, small business starts are illegal in most places (even my place, in the middle of nowhere, as the local flooring cost trap and zoned business property tax rackets are disregarded here).
My point is that the excessive government spending on most of those perceived as being worthy must eventually be decreased, so most of us will be in the same boat before long. For decades, many real conservatives are probably more likely to be poor, and both political parties are quite socialist, especially in state and local governments.
BTW, in my area of the country, I’m acquainted with too many people working in defense civil service jobs (and pensioners) who lean far to the left and despise conservatives. They despise veterans even more.
