Today is the 30th Anniv of "Operation Urgent Fury(Grenada)" this operation and it's aftermath lead DIRECTLY to "Goldwater/Nicols(1986)" and "Jointness".
I was there too. Dropping some Rangers out of a 130.
God Bless both of you and your fine service given selflessly in honor and defense of this Great Republic.
Yep, I was there floating around aboard the USS Indy too, almost got put ashore on day one of the invasion. What I remember from that cruise was porting in Italy, England, Turkey, Israel and one of the sponsons getting really tore up bad in the North Atlantic.
Oh yea, I was also Brooke Shields escort after she came aboard the USS Indy in Haifa with the USO show. Memories
God bless you, and thank you for your service.
You were part of the beginning of our victory in the WW III (a.k.a. the Cold War). Grenada was the first repudiation of the Brezhnev Doctrine “What we take we keep,” and though it was a small country, the significance of its removal from the Soviet empire should not be underestimate.
I’m sure there were a bunch of Seals that wished they were dropped by you that day...
I went with Cold Steel Bravo 2/505th PIR, dropped off by some C141 pilots.
Congrats to all who were involved with this mission.
I remember how upset the media was that Reagan had not informed them of the event .. but we all know that if Reagan had informed them .. they would have been there on the beaches with spotlights on our military and caused untold deaths (as usual).
Anyway, there has been a program about this mission on the military channel (213 on TWC). I have it saved to watch tonight. The program is called: Combat Zone - Invasion of Grenada.
God Bless You All.
Thanks and I fully agree with your comments.
The day we turned the tide of the Cold War to victory.
Yes the loss of those SEALs was a terrible tragedy. My heart still hurts. On a more technical note, we dropped the Rangers from 500 feet AGL as they wanted as little hang time as possible due to small arms fire. Emergency bailout is 400 feet. Not much room for error there.
