Yep and that’s the problem here. Successful republics need informed publics. When they fail from within, what has happened is the people believe:
1. They can get something for nothing.
2. Their guy’s corruption is “good” and the other guy’s corruption is “bad”.
When I read about the ruin of the Roman republic - the sexual mores and deviancy, profligate spending, egoism of the elites and the idiocy of the hoi polloi - well, I am living the future’s history and it doesn’t look bright.
That said, I also feel that we’re on an inflection point. What can’t go on won’t. A lot of people who have lived the liberal lifestyle are miserable. If they can put two and two together, perhaps we can right the ship.
