Government and health charities have been doling out duff healthy eating advice for decades, but when are they going to admit it? That's the question raised by the remarks of cardiologist Aseem Malhotra, who writing in the BMJ has challenged the orthodoxy that the consumption of foods containing saturated fat, such as butter and red meat, causes heart disease.
Malhotra is brave and principled to speak out, yet he is far from a lone voice. In 2010, a major review of scientific studies on fat, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, concluded that contrary to what we have been lead to believe, there is no convincing evidence that saturated fat causes heart disease. In the UK, other independent-minded nutritionists and medics, including John Briffa, Zoe Harcombe, and Malcolm Kendrick, have vociferously countered the biggest public health dogma of our times.

Butter from Ireland is even better.
My cardiologist told me “You can quit smoking (I already had). You can cut out the fats. You can exercise. But you can’t help who your daddy is. I told him I didn’t want to take statins and he said that was fine with him. I take niacin.
I can remember when margarine was touted as the healthy alternative to butter (which as it turned out, was not the case at all).
As for me, I maintain moderation remains the key in most things. I probably couldn’t get away with eating six sticks a day for breakfast (and wouldn’t want to, to be honest). But I’m not gonna stop enjoying butter on corn on the cob or slathered on a wedge of hot, home-made soda bread once in a while.
Oh man, the dairy products in Ireland...I could live on their milk, cheese and butter. Don’t like their bacon, but the dairy products are some of the best in the world, IMHO.
The Role of Cholesterol and Diet In Heart Disease
By Alice Ottoboni, Ph.D. and Fred Ottoboni, M.P.H., Ph.D.
I once read that 70% of diabetic will have some form of heart trouble.
Fast forward 15 years. Doctor puts me on statins. I take them until my shoulders are screaming with pain. Tell my doctor “I will not take them anymore.” She replies, “Ok, but you will have a 30% chance of developing heart problems in the next 10 years.”
Hmm, my odds are improving.
Yes, Ireland has the best environment for dairy cattle, and it shows up in the quality of their milk and butter.
Milk with 10% butter fat! The absolute best tasting and healthiest there is.
I never fell for that “margarine” marketing. Always used butter and still do. Guess I had “Common Sense” then, too : )
Good article. I really object the demonizing of whole milk and whole milk products. Especially its ban in so many elementary schools, just the age when children need that fat and cholesterol for brain development.
Treat yourself to some European butter such as Kerrygold. It is what I use when making croissants.
General Rule in my house is if the CDC or the FDA or MOOchelle’s fat pyramids tell you it is bad. It is likely good for you.
We eat a whole health protein rich, vitamin rich, garlic spice rich diet.
Tons of Olive , Coconut and natural oils.
There are no HFCS’s, packaged foods, fake bacon and no animal or dairy products with hormones or antibiotics.
We eat organic everything, No glyphosate period.
I am a technically “green” Conservative in the sense that I do not introduce any Chemical, fake , hormone antibiotic crap into my environment.
Breast Cancer survivor, non carb eater
I use avo oil in soap making. I worry that hubby will figure out how delicious it is on salads and purloin my supply.
Is there a difference between conjugate linoleic acid and the regular linoleic fatty acid? I’m familiar with most fatty acids because of soap making but the term conjugate linoleic is new to me.
I render my own lard from organic fat back and make my own ghee - which is rendered butter. (This separates out the milk solids and lasts much longer.)
I keep table butter in a ‘butter bell’ so it's always spreadable.
I've been writing about these in my columns for years.
Also, remember, Canola oil (made from rape seed) and soy bean oil is almost certainly grown with Monsanto chemicals. Olive oil burns quicker than lard or coconut oil - and goes rancid to quickly, turning it into a very unhealthy oil.
(I was raised on my grandparents farm in the north woods during the late ‘30’s and 40’s. We provided the bulk of own foods - much the same as people had for centuries. Invaluable ‘training.”
You’ve never heard of CLA?
My favorite vegetable is popcorn.
How can I enjoy my favorite vegetable without a little butter on it?
Canola is a genetically altered substance, thus not fit for consumption by any living thing.
ahm yeah, I think I conveyed that in saying: "Also, remember, Canola oil (made from rape seed) and soy bean oil is almost certainly grown with Monsanto chemicals"?
