Republican attorney and activist Linda Vega will run in the GOP primary for the U.S. Senate seat held by John Cornyn.
During a Tuesday announcement five months ahead of the March primaries, Vega said she will push for limited government and the fight against excessive government spending.
“Washington, D.C., needs a red-state model on education and economic growth, that of low taxes and pro-business,” she said.
And she said there are "politicians from our own state who feel so entitled to their political position that one week they tell you they are for something, but the following week they are against the same thing they previously supported."
Cornyn campaign manager Brendan Steinhauser said that "as the second most conservative senator in America, Sen. Cornyn looks forward to discussing his record and welcomes Ms. Vega into the race.”
The senior senator's campaign doesn't appear financially vulnerable — as of Sept. 30, he had nearly $7 million in cash on hand, according to Roll Call. But Cornyn could face additional opposition in the 2014 GOP primary, as Tea Party operatives looking to swing the seat further to the right seek candidates to run against him.
Originally from Weslaco in South Texas, Vega is a Houston attorney and previously worked for the U.S. Department of Labor. Her practice is focused on immigration and labor law, according to a biography on her campaign website.
Vega is also a founding member of Latinos Ready to Vote, a conservative political advocacy group that promotes voter registration and participation among Latinos.
Vega describes herself as supportive of immigration reform but warns against a system that penalizes businesses.
"In Texas, we believe that the power comes from the individual, from hard work and the private sector," Vega said. "Small businesses are often the first start to the road of prosperity for many immigrants who come here in search of the American dream."
In her announcement, Vega said she admires Gov. Rick Perry. She has also previously lent her support to Attorney General Greg Abbott in his bid for governor, calling his outreach to the Latino community “positive conservatism.”

name in the primary in opposition to Cornyn. By Dec. 9, 2013 we’ll know
who actually does enter the primary.
What eventually happened to the Rockport (or perhaps it is Freeport) man who filed to primary Cornyn months ago? Is he no longer in the picture? Either a replacement is found for John, or that seat will fail to get any vote from this direction. Just being a pubbie is no longer is a vote guaranteed. In the past a straight ticket...in the future, no longer the case.

Did a little digging on the web and not able to come up with a whole lot on Vega but what is there is troubling. She worked in DC in the Department of Labor and apparently a lot of her time was spent “resolving” issues on behalf of businesses who were accused of immigration violations. At some point in time she apparently was licensed to practice law in New Mexico but unable to confirm this other than one brief mention.
She says immigration reform is the centerpiece of her campaign. IMO we don’t need reform, we need enforcement of the laws on the books.

You’re right the only “immigration reform” we need is to enforce existing law, I would like to see Congressman Gohmert in the Senate.

Although Cornyn did vote against the final bill, he and all Republicans knew that voting for cloture to end debate would allow Senator Harry Reid to fund ObamaCare by a party-line vote, and thus a vote for cloture was a de facto vote to fund ObamaCare.
2. Cornyn Voted for the Wall Street Bailout (T.A.R.P.)

The cost of raising the minimum wage is passed onto consumers in the form of higher prices for goods and services.

7. Cornyn Supported Intrusive Internet Regulations (PIPA)
Although he later withdrew his support (under withering fire from internet freedom advocates across the political spectrum), Senator Cornyn voted for the Protect Intellectual Privacy Act (PIPA) in committee. His vote helped move PIPA to the Senate floor, where it met a well-deserved defeat. Under PIPA, the government would have the power to shut down millions of websites. This is economically destructive and a gross violation of our constitutional right to free speech.
8. Cornyn Voted to Allow Warrantless Data Collection on American Citizens
In 2007, Senator Cornyn voted for the FISA Amendments Act, which granted immunity to U.S. telecommunication companies for giving information about their customers to the government without a warrant. This is one of the key provisions that allowed the NSA to conduct its now-publicized warrantless blanket surveillance of American citizens.
9. Cornyn Has Voted to Raise the Debt Ceiling Eight Times
Since entering office in 2002, Senator Cornyn has voted to raise the debt ceiling eight times (including the debt ceiling increase contained in number 1, above). Raising the debt limit only encourages reckless spending in Washington. Congress needs to cut spending and balance the budget—not continue to increase our national debt without any spending reforms or reductions.
10. Cornyn Voted to Reauthorize the Patriot Act
(2006, RCV 25) Although he was not present in Congress when the original USA-PATRIOT Act was passed, Senator Cornyn has been an enthusiastic supporter of the controversial law, voting to permanently reauthorize most of its provisions in 2006. Despite its attractive-sounding title, the so-called Patriot Act violates our Fourth Amendment right to privacy, authorizing unprecedented surveillance powers that permit the federal government to spy on U.S. citizens without a warrant.
