Democrat Terry McAuliffe has jumped to a 17-point lead over Republican Ken Cuccinelli in the Virginia gubernatorial race following the federal government shutdown that hit Northern Virginia hard and Hillary Clintons weekend visit to the state.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Virginia Voters finds McAuliffe with 50% support to Cuccinellis 33%. Libertarian candidate Robert Sarvis is a distant third with eight percent (8%) of the vote. Three percent (3%) like some other candidate, while five percent (5%) remain undecided.

Illegal aliens vote in significant numbers in Northern Virginia. They get registered by the SEIU and a local spinoff.
The establishment (RINOs) Republicans in Virginia are the cause of Cuccinelli’s problems. They lost the nomination fair and square, and now they are backstabbing Cuccinelli and/or supporting McAuliffe.
Today, they are planning how to rig future primaries and conventions to block conservatives. They are also fighting to generate aid programs for illegal aliens.
Just a reflection of what is happening nationally. The Republican establishment just doesn’t get it.
I was never an advocate for attaching the defunding of ObamaCare to the budget. I would have supported a separate bill to defund ObamaCare but the shutdown should never have happened over the defunding of ObamaCare.
Where I take issue is the fact that the Senate is the one that shut down the government for failing to vote on what the House sent up to them. Yes, defund ObamaCare was part of the deal, but the Senate refused to vote on it. This was a Senate shutdown. Of course the dems are going to blame the republicans, they’ve been blaming the republicans even when the republicans were the minority in the House. They will ALWAYS blame the republicans. It’s called politics.
When republicans such as McCain bame republicans, that’s where we have problems. I’m not voting for my republican Senator in 2014. This will be a first for me. If my Senator loses, yes the media will claim it’s because of the shutdown even though my Senator was against the Tea Party as much as John McCain was.
I’m voting for my Tea Party Governor’s re-election but not for the Senate.
Remember, the loss in the polls the GOP may be experiencing is not just those “independents” and “republican leaning” liberal democrats polled but also republicans who were not at all happy with the RINO attacks and the republican establishment joining the democrats to point fingers and name call particular fractions of the GOP.
Count me as one of those unhappy with the GOP. I’ll bet many Freepers would have voted the same in that poll.
pubs always have a chance if the stinky lazy sloths would get off their arses to vote...and if the stupid and illogical third party people would someday actually get a clue....
in the mean time, I would hope people would stop posting all this doom and gloom...
tea party did right to try to stop obamanocare....
Just tell women you will take away abortion. They are a selfish bunch.
OldBill, I’m doing a poll.
Are you happy with today” GOP?
Yes or No
RINO Governor O’Donnell has been involved in corruption accusations and above all he raised taxes in Virginia.
I think that helps Sarvis and hurts Cuccinelli.
We cannot ignore that there are many Conservative independents and conservative republicans who likely had their say in the polling going on out there and I’m sure they too are very unhappy with today’s GOP.
Count me as one of them. I will not be voting to re-elect my republican Senator in 2014.
Actually Bob Dole led to Clinton's re-election in 1996.
Gerald Ford - (impeachment of Nixon)
George H Walker Bush (Reagan's coattails)
Bob Dole - defeated
John McCain - defeated
Mitt Romney - Defeated
no we’re not. I have not seen one ad over the past few days, except for the dems. I have not seen one campaign stop in our area, except for the dems.
All they have to do is tell the truth about McAwful and he will lose but they don’t. NO TV ads, no, newspaper ads, no web presence, no radio ads.. nada. They gave up on VA because of the influence of Fairfax, Alexandria and Arlington.
The man has done nothing in his life except bilk people out of their money and they can’t find anything negative to run against him?
This has been a microcosm of the Republican strategy for the past six years. They play prevent defense and hope for a critical mistake by the other guy and it hasn’t worked even when the other guys makes a mistake.
I just hope they get their act together for 2014.
Judging from the comments about this race on Pollutico, even the liberals hate McAuliffe, but they’re supporting him enthusiastically just so “the Cooch” doesn’t win.
Just ask Ted Cruz if he feels Cuccinelli attacked him. Hint: The answer is 'no'.
And these same libs are laughing their arses off at how they get away with fooling too many conservatives to think that Cooch is not a conservative stalwart.
In the News/Activism forum, on a thread titled Rasmussen: Virginia Governor: McAuliffe (D) 50%, Cuccinelli (R) 33%, Sarvis (L) 8%, ScottinVA wrote:
If you live in VA and get out to where people meet like a bar or coffee shop. What are people talking about anything political, gus.taxes etc ? And is Cucccinelli talking about the same stuff in his ads?
Yes, he is... but it doesn’t matter. The cities are teeming with democrat voters and NOVA is overrun with foreigners and parasites from other states. Last time I was in Falls Church (2010), I felt like I was in a foreign country.
Plus... face it.. the concepts of liberty, freedom and self-determination simply don’t have the appeal they once did. Americans want to be ruled now. They accept the chains of oppression, so long as they get their guaranteed bowl of rice a day.
Yea your right! Why bother? they’re just a bunch of rice democrats. Besides McAulffe needs a license to steal after he raises their taxes....
he will be an absentee governor. He will do what he can to advance the agenda issues of gay marriage, gun control and legalizing pot (demagogue the issues) and sit back while the locals in the rest of the state bitch.. all the while he will be helping Hillary shore-up NoVa for 2016.
I wish they tried.
It’s difficult to compete with the millions the left is spending distorting Cuccinelli’s record.
“Do you really believe it would end the same way this time?”
No. It would be worse. The yankees didn’t have drones, nukes, poison gas, and biological agents last time.
Surely you don't mean like some of the pharisaical purists on Freep - who bought it hook, line and sinker......../s
Are you in VA? If you happen to have a link to the "awesome" (GOP) ads for Cuccinelli, I'd love to see them. I was disappointed when the RNC was a no-show for Joe Miller, in AK. It would seem they could do much more in the way of appearances with popular Pubbies, etc
I didn't say Republicans are worthless (although several have me seriously wondering about that!), I said the RNC was. I've yet to see a good (general) return on investment from this group, in the last four years.
As far as high horses and ignorance go...I'll just say your rudeness towards me proved your own "high horse" attitude and "ignorance".
