The competition to be the next Ted Cruz is extremely hot within the Republican Party, where a number of emerging challengers are hoping to capitalize on the newest brand name in conservative politics.
In Kansas,Milton R. Wolf opened his fundraising pitch to supporters last week by asking them whether he could be the next Cruz candidate. In Mississippi,Chris McDaniel announced his campaign to unseat Sen. Thad Cochran last week and welcomed the comparison to Mr. Cruz, calling it a compliment.
hen theres Ben Sasse,a university president running for Nebraskas U.S. Senate seat, who set state fundraising records by opposing Obamacare. He told the Lincoln Journal Star last week that he would have voted with Mr. Cruz to keep the government shut down last week, saying it was a better option than continuing to spend and run up debt.
Theyre tapping into the anti-establishment feelings that are really running high among Republican primary voters, said Ron Bonjean, a GOP consultant.
In many ways, Mr. Cruz has become the shorthand for the tea party, which was already a shorthand way to categorize conservative voters who subscribe to a low-spending,low-taxes philosophy of government.
Mr. Cruz also became a shorthand for tactics after he led a 21 hour,19 minute filibuster in September and insisted that fellow Republicans refuse to fund the rest of government until President Obama agreed to cancel the Affordable Care Act.
In the minds of voters, and even for many lawmakers in Washington, the policy and the tactics have become one and the same.
Online message boards are full of comments from tea party supporters calling for the ouster of Republican Party leaders, and vowing to support only those who espouse a tea party philosophy.
Mr. Cruz came from behind in polls to win the Republican nomination for Senate over a wealthy, establishment-backed candidate, then easily won the general election in 2012.

John McCain will be very upset. And Lindsey Graham will lament that he’s on the wrong side just before an election. Too bad. Oh, too bad!
I’m for the hot one against Ghramnesty.
I'd think conservatives should do real well in 2014. The RINOs are exposed, good for primary fights. Then, come election time, dems are going to have to run on Obama's list of failures, which is just about everything he's done.
The polls are designed and constructed (weighted) so that the compliant Obama media gets the headline they want.
Milton Wolf has my support because Jerry Moran turned out to be spineless
I think most people - where I am in this portion of rural Missouri - see the “Tea Party” as something that messed with the functioning of the Fed Gov and caused a shutdown and harm to the economy without accomplishing anything in the process. It didn’t stop the ACA (AKA Obamacare) and actually got the POTUS more of htan he would have gotten in a clean CR. The reputation of the Tea Party has been tarnished in the eyes of those, otherwise conservatives, that were made to suffer directly or indirectly by a shutdown that accomplished nothing tangible. The POTUS is still not popular, but the “Tea Party” (and the GOP by association) are being perceived as radical and not good for America. BTW - I live in an area that relies on the Military for its economy. So, that may make this area unique. I do hear for more folks moving towards being independents (non-libertarian ones).
Flimsey Tinkerbelle will be stamping his little feet should he be defeated by an actual WOMAN!
Can’t wait to vote for her.
Wait until we hear the democrats response from John McCain and Peter King.
As long as they are genuine, bring em on!! No more RINOS!!!
Unless the candidate has the same back bone as Cruz, I won’t vote for a RINO romney, christie, rubio or ryan, dem wolves is sheeple clothing. Why should I vote for a RINO lite?
Heh heh...
And I just heard some GOPE operative on the radio this morning talking about Hillary winning next time as “we don’t have a candidate”
What do you mean “we”...white man?
For those that are experienced challenged: “Tonto, we are surrounded by hostile Indians! What are we going to do?”
A very good analogy for the RINO’s!!!!
Experienced = experience. Sigh.
Not only can you not be "the next Ted Cruz, you also cannot be the next Ronald Reagan!
Wolfe is a wolfe in Wolfe's clothing, in other words, a sham in plain sight, if one bothers to check him out!
He is no conservative and he doesn't know enough about true Libertarian principles to be that either!
I hope people will check the candidates out and not just take it for granted that they are conservative just because they use Ted Cruz’s name.
Excellent point.
We need to get out the word to TEA folks NOT TO POLL. Next years’ primaries are going to be hacked six ways from Sunday, with over-the-top vote fraud, and we have to confuse the machine by NOT letting them know how many votes they need to manufacture or cast fraudulently.
David Dewhurst, who was defeated by Cruz, is trying to glom onto TEA, they ALL will. Sarah will vet all the RINOS for us.
Dewhurst must be really scared judging by the number of commercials he is already running trying to pass himself off as conservative.
