Do I understand correctly that they don’t have cruisers of any kind anymore?

Ah Yes the Zummwalt Destroyers.

The Ospreys of the United States Navy.

Expensive, Vulnerable and Useless.

On time and under budget-pretty standard for Bath Ironworks.

The union/management apprentice training programs are very effective in training new skilled workers. Some of the apprentices can even earn an AA degree from a college in Maine.

I was on the USS Jonas Ingram. This ship is nearly 200 feel longer and nearly twice as wide. It isn’t a destroyer. It’s a cruiser. It’s approaching the size of WWII carriers.

It’s a heavy cruiser in all but name.

This littoral ship will probably be used against citizens attempting to smuggle their money out of the country by boat. Off shore bombardment of port cities in response to civil unrest is a potential use. Smuggling in Al Qaeda agents into the US is another possibility.

With this thing’s displacement greater than many heavy cruisers, imagine what a modern nuclear battleship would be like? Firing rail guns to accurately nail targets at 115 miles away. Using particle beams to burn anything out of the sky that comes within their range. Probably some equally devastating anti-submarine weaponry.

Will the news cameras be there?

If so, Angus King will throw himself in front of one.

If it’s that large, it’s not a destroyer. A true destroyer is known by one name only, “tin can”. Destroyers are called “tin cans” for a reason. “Tin can sailors” are proud of their service on destroyers for a reason.

“A destroyer doesn’t roll, it snaps.”

If it’s longer than 170 ft, it’s something other than a destroyer. For over a century, a destroyer’s mission is to carry torpedoes & protect the fleet from enemy submarines.

What’s not to understand?

So, for almost 2x the cost of a Virginia-class boat, can anyone tell me what this monstrosity can do that a sub CAN’T (besides the stupid f’in gun)??? Besides having the armament of 2+ of the latter (and almost 1/3 more crew)?

“Shore bombardment”? Are you f’in kidding me??? The US Navy’s killing the US Navy. We don’t need no enemy...

The DDG-1000 ships of the Zumwalt-class are getting a major redesign that will add tons to their weight. The composite superstructure has to be replaced by steel. Likewise, it's doubtful if the Navy's ERG (electromagnetic rail gun) will work as intended on the ship. DDG-1000 is a very large and expensive target at $7 billion per copy.

Seems like it relies to heavily on helo launched ASW weapons. No ship lunched ASW torpedoes?

Yes...the Barney was a Norfolk ship as well...but they made the trip anyway for some reason.

I did a Med cruise 87-88 and also did the Caribbean.

Was on the Elliot (Spruance class) out of San Diego at the end of my 6 yr enlistment and did West Pac/Persian Gulf.

More Gulf than West Pac.
