A group of Boy Scouts leaders may face criminal charges after purposely knocking over an ancient Utah desert rock formation and posting a video of the incident online, authorities say
The men were leading a group of 14 to 16-year-old Boy Scouts on a trip to Goblin Valley State Park when they said they noticed the top of the rock formation was loose and feared it was dangerous.
"This is about saving lives," Dave Hall, who shot the video, told The Associated Press on Friday. "One rock at a time."

Did you see the video? These aren’t scouts or even men. They’ve obese, crude thugs. They’re also liars by their high fives you can see this was for fun....nothing to do with kids safety. I’m sure this isn’t the first time they’ve been in handcuffs.
Regardless of how well meaning these men were, they defaced something they should never have touched. I don’t know if criminal charges are appropriate, but they should at least banned from state parks for a long time.
I would enjoy it if these scouts were attacked by giant ants, but that happened in New Mexico.
"Oh but they're so pretty."
This type of idiotic sentimentalism is why we're allowing farmers and landowners property to be decimated protecting biologically obsolete animals and even PLANTS.
They thought they were being so cool, weren’t they?
“Do you think they should go to prison?”
No I don’t think they should go to prison. I think they should clean the outhouses in that park for one year. They could also put up a sign telling people what they did and how they are making amends. Then the people using said outhouses could show them the appropriate appreciation.
95% of the USS Constitution has been replaced. Very little of the original ship exists on the ship itself.
If visitors had determined the ship’s future based on their own fears, Old Ironsides would probably be at the bottom of Boston Harbor.
The proper thing for the BSA “leaders” to have done would’ve been to notify the state park of the danger (if any). At this point, we only have the word of the destructive scout leaders to go by.
On the list of “Lamest Excuses Ever”, their excuse for pushing the rock over, would be near the top.
To add to my post, I’ve hiked the trails in Utah. Took lots of photos of the hoodoos and such. This kind of vandalism and disrespect burns me up. The whole pathetic attitude and mindset it represents. Just like when some idiot poisons and kills a historic tree, or torches the governor’s mansion, here in Texas. Don’t dismiss it all as just some liberal, eco-freak kind of outrage.
Your post is a winner, if thousands of people go through and never touch it, then, these folks shouldn’t have either. If you have a concern tell the Ranger. These guys in toppling the rocks could have been hurt themselves. Then whose fault it is it? The State of Utah may well then be liable.
Or a fine.
Exactly, who isn’t peeved if one finds beer cans in a nature area? It’s not a great crime but it probably chaffs the hide of a lot of people.
All those saying “nature worship” and all this, might as well say littering is okay.
It wasn't a kid, it was a 200+ lb. man who had to put all his force into pushing it down.....That rock wasn't about to fall anytime soon.
We’re just talking about some loose rocks here, right?
Not in the goo-goos’ heads, rocks just lying around?
Is this really a `O the Huge manatee’ moment? Rocks.
Not safe? Maybe. However, it wasn’t his decision to make.
They took it upon themselves to decide for everyone that the rocks were loose. They just *knew* what was best for everyone.
Typical liberal behavior.
Exactly, if it bothers someone, don’t go to the Park, report it. These Scouts, Scoutmasters themselves could have been hurt knocking rocks over.
Maybe one has to live in the Southwest to appreciate this because I’ve seen similar places, “City of Rocks” near Deming New Mexico and the like though Utah is famous for these places and even has a National Park or Monument.

Not my place to disturb a place before others see it.
Thank you for bringing sanity to this thread. Too many here think that vandalizing a National Treasure like Goblin Valley is no big deal.
These morons need to spend some time behind prison walls breaking rocks. These guys are no different from taggers and I’d venture to say that most freepers would favor the death penalty for taggers.
I'm quite sure the Scout leaders deserve lynching though.
The rage that simmers below the surface in my gut is reserved for those who abhor any defamation of mother nature yet couldn't give a rats ass about abortion.
The day I'll start to care about a rock getting pushed over is the same day I expect abortionists to care about human life.
A cold day in hell.
