Michael Stravato for The New York Times
Bruce Labay, a businessman in El Campo, Texas, on Friday. Mr. Labay expressed his support
for Senator Ted Cruz by attaching plastic foam cups to a fence.
HOUSTON Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas and the face of the angry right, has been criticized, lambasted and lampooned for putting the nation through a 16-day government shutdown and the prospect of a financial default.
Bloomberg Businessweek put him on its cover as a mad hatter who defines how crazy is the new normal. Representative Peter T. King, a Republican from New York, has said Republican leaders need to go after Mr. Cruz and accused him of bringing the country to the edge of ruin.
In Texas, it is a different story.
Drivers speeding down a busy highway about 70 miles outside Houston have been greeted with two blunt messages that Bruce Labay put up at his oil field services business. One declared that Mr. Labay was tired of softhearted Republicans, though he used a more colorful adjective. The other read, We Need More Republicans Like Ted Cruz.
Mr. Labay, 55, made his signs by sticking 1,200 plastic foam cups, one by one, into the loops of his chain-link fence, a 90-minute project that filled much of the fencing around BL Oilfield Services in the town of El Campo.
I was proud of him, Mr. Labay said of the states junior senator. I was proud he was a Texan. I wish they would have held firm, and wed still be shut down. .......

When I see this: "Republican political consultant"
I think this:
Take your pick!
I know there are God fearing conservatives in Austin...I live in Bryan/College Station. You even have some good tea sippers there...:) And Austin is definitely a mission field. God Bless you and keep you safe.
“I probably will visit next year or so. I dont plan on relocating there: I couldnt deal with your oddly horrible gun carry laws. I dont mind it for a visit but it wouldnt work for me long term. Which marxist dont yall like? Groucho, Zeppo, or Harpo?”
Well, we are friendly folks, mostly. So, you’re welcome to visit as long as you want just so you mind your manners. What is it about our gun laws that you couldn’t deal with? Are they too liberal or too stringent for you? Btw, I like all the Marx brothers - not to be confused with Marxists which I can’t tolerate. Are you a Marxist? Also, where abouts do you live? Just curious :)
The Dallas Morning News daily prints letters to the editor from the liberals in Texas just pummeling Cruz. Every now and then they print a pro Cruz. Makes me so mad tempted to cancel.
Tamara Holder is so rude I have to change channels when she is on. I can’t stand her.
Because Cruz stayed away from the personal attacks, he made Obama and Hairy Reed look small and juvenile.
Ill take The first one. So many meanings. LOL
Texas is one of the last bastions of REAL America. We need to keep it that way. I’m seriously thinking of moving there.
“What is it about our gun laws that you couldnt deal with? Are they too liberal or too stringent for you?”
FAR too stringent. I openly carry the Tools of Liberty, and Texas does not allow that. Hence the demonstration at the Alamo earlier today. Wish I could have been there to help. Texas, while it does allow concealed carry, has one of the more expensive and difficult to obtain “shall issue” permits in the country. For comparison’s sake, the new Illinois permit costs roughly the same as the Texas permit does ($150 versus $140). Which is roughly 3 times the maximum for a Virginia permit (varies by locality but cannot be more than $50).
I’m not a marxist or even a ‘rat anymore. I left in the 07-08 timeframe. I keep the site handle for nostalgia.
Like they did for Governor Sarah Palin? Oh, wait...
?....sorry, I don’t understand you response?
Texas is one of the last bastions of REAL America. We need to keep it that way. Im seriously thinking of moving there.
Had the honor of living there for 3 years in late 70’s
I think she's great....but I hope we have that someone in Cruz who won't stop, quit or give up...(and the pressure will be, is already, on him like it was on her
We need him to stay the course.
“Dropped out of the running” you say? I assume you’re referring to a race for the Republican nomination for the presidency? How does one drop out of a race that one never entered in the first place? Or did I miss something?
What defeat. We stacked Barrycades in front of the aforementioned’s house. My God. Do I have to come to Washington myself.
My bad.....you’re right
I just remember whe I heard she wouldn’t run, I was deeply disappointed
Cruz has already taken a lifetime’s worth of verbal bullets from all sides for defending the Constitution in a few short months. I think he’s one of the rare cats who can’t be scared. That’s what is driving the progressives nuts. Bob
