Moscow (AFP) - Russia's prison service on Friday announced it would transfer Pussy Riot punk Nadezhda Tolokonnikova to another penal colony after she went on hunger strike complaining of slave-labour conditions and threats.
Tolokonnikova, 23, is serving a two-year sentence in a penal colony in the Mordovia region of central Russia for the band's protest against President Vladimir Putin in a Moscow church.
On September 23 she began an eight-day hunger strike demanding to be moved to another penal colony. It ended with her being taken to a hospital run by the prison service and placed on a drip.
On Friday the prison service said she had signed a statement that she was once more "refusing to take food" after being moved back to her penal colony.
Hours later, it announced that she would be transferred to another colony.
"Due to a message submitted to the Russian Prison Service by Nadezhda Tolokonnikova about ensuring her personal safety, the leadership of the service has decided to transfer her from Penal Colony No. 14 in Mordovia to another penitential institution," it said.
As is standard practice, relatives will only be informed of her new location within 10 days, it said. It was not immediately clear if she was carrying on with the new hunger strike.
Tolokonnikova's husband Pyotr Verzilov told AFP he believed the prison service took the decision under pressure.
"It's the result of pressure from the public and the authorities, and especially the harsh comment from (Kremlin rights ombudsman Vladimir) Lukin this morning," he said.
Lukin told Moscow Echo radio station that the prison service had "deceived" him after promising to consider transferring Tolokonnikova if she halted her hunger strike.
Tolokonnikova last month released a letter detailing how inmates were treated like "slaves" and worked

There are rioting cats in Russia?
Send her to Siberia!
No, just rioting communists. She’s a communist. She’s suffering in prison. I fail to see the problem.
odd that they use the phrase “penal colony” so often in this article...
If you’re going to name a place “Mordovia” you kind of need to have a penal colony there. Not having one wouldn’t seem right.
By the way, the communist in question, while pregnant, appeared in a homemade “protest porn” video filmed in a Russian State Museum. She apparently is from the “bring them down in the morals department first” school of communist subversion.
I prefer Viking Kitties
One does not simply walk into Mordovia.
Send ‘em to the Lubyanka.

It would probably have done her good to have read some
Solzhenitsyn, the basic technique of Soviet penal reform
is through LABOR......that and a graduated scale of
rations.
Yes, I know it’s not soviet any more but... at this time
what difference does it make...
Actually they were protesting the Russian Orthodox Church for going along quietly with Putin's elimination of the free press and free speech. In Putin's Russia that gets you put in Mordovia.
What a strange combination of words in one sentence
Thank you. There’s a disturbing amount of totalitarianism fanboys on FR these days...
So, are you rooting for a communist who forcing her way to altar in a #1 national Cathedral to scream profanity just because her “ends justify means”? Isn’t it too much Leninesque on your side?
Are you familiar with other stunts by this group?
I've noticed that. Sad.
You go around breaking the law sooner or later the law breaks you.
I’m not rooting for anyone. It’s just quite possible neither side are the ‘good guys’.
