Smoot Hawley was in a time when America exported a great deal of America goods to other countries.
The opposite is now the case.
The opposite tact, is now called for.
Just saying.
So let me understand. Protective tariffs mean that all the stuff we do import will become prohibitively expensive, artificially raising the cost of goods for American consumers and businesses.
And the exports we do have will dry up because of retaliatory tariffs imposed by foreign governments, thereby reducing revenues for American companies that sell abroad.
I admit that I’m not a finance guy. But what you propose does seems like it will cause far more damage to what’s left of the American economy than it would cure.
That, on top of the government raising the cost of labor with Obamacare, really seems like a sure recipe for disaster.
