A Teachable Moment (Smug Country Club Pub Lectures Tea Party)
NY Slimes ^ | 10/17/2013 | Ross Douthat

Posted on 10/17/2013 10:30:31 AM PDT by mojito

...But with tonight’s vote done and the government open once again, I want to return to...and stress once more the essential absurdity of the specific populist gambit we’ve just witnessed unfold, drag on, and now finally collapse. However you slice and dice the history, the strategery, and the underlying issues, the decision to live with a government shutdown for an extended period of time — inflicting modest-but-real harm on the economy, needlessly disrupting the lives and paychecks of many thousands of hardworking people, and further tarnishing the Republican Party’s already not-exactly-shiny image — in pursuit of obviously, obviously unattainable goals was not a normal political blunder by a normally-functioning political party. It was an irresponsible, dysfunctional and deeply pointless act, carried out by a party that on the evidence of the last few weeks shouldn’t be trusted with the management of a banana stand, let alone the House of Representatives.

This means that the still-ongoing intra-conservative debate over the shutdown’s wisdom is not, I’m sorry, the kind of case where reasonable people can differ on the merits and have good-faith arguments and ultimately agree to disagree. There was no argument for the shutdown itself that a person unblindered by political fantasies should be obliged to respect, no plausible alternative world in which it could have led to any outcome besides self-inflicted political damage followed by legislative defeat, and no epitaph that should be written for its instigators’ planning and execution except: “These guys deserved to lose.”

Understand that Douthat is the Slimes' idea of a "conservative," now that even they can no longer pretend that David Brooks fills that role.

For Ross, the destruction of the republic is not something to resist, to fight at every turn, to protest. No, in Ross' little beltway world, things are just fine, and getting better all the time. Or would be, if only these irresponsible tea party types would just get with the program and do what they're told, just like Mitch and Juan and Johnny B. want them to. Because, as we all know, these traitors know best. And what they know best is kowtowing to Democrats and acquesing to the destruction of our country and our liberty.

... and the more contempt I have for their charges that it is conservatives who are responsible for the marxist wreck in the White House.

“....the more determined I am to leave the party....”

Personally, I left it a long time ago.
There is absolutely no difference between GOPe and Rats. They are both evil. When they send me their “beg” letters, I just fill the envelope with some hefty bolt washers and send it back at their expense. Recently, I’ve also started including a tea bag in there hoping the get “the message”. The stupid fools just keep sending me more “beg” letters. IF ever there was a time for a viable 3rd party, it is now.

Get used to it Ross. Cruz is in the senate for at least 5 more years, getting up the noses of liberals of both parties.

And there isn't a think Ross can do about it.

"Utter folly"?

Consider this:

Millions of Americans, whose only source of information about their Constitution may have been through the so-called "progressive" lens, may have learned from Ted Cruz's strong words and actions and those of a few others that the Constitution was intended to protect them from coercive government power such as that being exercised by the current Administration and the Reed-dictated Senate.

Given McCain's comments about the courageous Cruz, as well as those of other purely "establishment" Republicans, clearly, it is the Party that must be have a "teachable moment," if there is to be one.

In fact, it should be pushed, pressed, threatened, and made to understand that votes and pocketbooks will not be forthcoming unless the Party leadership pledges renewed adherence to the principles of America's Constitution.

In 1776 and 1787, a new nation set its course by recognition of Divine Providence, Creator-endowed life, liberty, and rights, and a form of strictly-limited self-government under a written Constitution to protect themselves and their property.

That formula worked for over 200 years to secure freedom for oppressed people from all over the earth who fled the same kind of coercive, top-down rule by imperfect persons in government that is being imposed by both Parties in Washington today!

The arrogant, big government, "we-know-what's-best-for-you" atmosphere in Washington must be stopped if our grandchildren and great-grandchildren are to enjoy anything but rank slavery. It will not be stopped by a leader who is incapable of quickly recalling and articulating the foundation ideas of the Founders' formula.

Promises to do this and that, fast talk, and bashing the opponent are not going to relight the torch of freedom and restart the engine of opportunity and prosperity, nor are they going to inspire youth to dream great dreams and to be passionate about liberty for themselves and their posterity.

American youth need an intellectual giant whose ideas come from behind his eyeballs, not from a teleprompter in front of them. They need an inspirational leader whose passion for liberty is greater than his ego and self-perceived "achievements."

Those "patriot dreams" are not just words in a song. They were lived out by men who lost their fortunes, their families, and their own health and lives--just for us!

"Posterity: you will never know how much it has cost my generation to preserve your freedom. I hope you will make good use of it." - John Quincy Adams

"The people have almost always expected to be served gratis, and to be paid for the honour of serving them; and their applauses and adorations are bestowed too often on artifices and tricks, on hypocrisy and superstition, on flattery, bribes, and largesses. It is no wonder then that democracies and democratical mixtures are annihilated all over Europe, except on a barren rock, a paltry fen, an inaccessible mountain, or an impenetrable forest. The people of England, to their immortal honour, are hitherto an exception; but, to the humiliation of human nature, they shew very often that they are like other men. The people in America have now the best opportunity, and the greatest trust, in their hands, that Providence ever committed to so small a number, since the transgression of the first pair: if they betray their trust, their guilt will merit even greater punishment than other nations have suffered, and the indignation of heaven. If there is one certain truth to be collected from the history of all ages, it is this: That the people's rights and liberties, and the democratical mixture in a constitution, can never be preserved without a strong executive, or, in other words, without separating the executive power from the legislative. If the executive power, or any considerable part of it, is left in the hands either of an aristocratical or a democratical assembly, it will corrupt the legislature as necessarily as rust corrupts iron, or as arsenic poisons the human body; and when the legislature is corrupted the people are undone." - John Adams, January, 1787

They’re also out there trying to blame zerocare on the Republicans, saying it was originally their plan.

Yes we got the MESSAGE!

Now the US has a Politburo that acts and speaks as one,

All are Nationalist Socialist Communists now.

Except for we free people, those outside of the political circle.

Now we know who stands with us.

We will see how that tyranny and corruption lifestyle works out for you Politburo folks in the long run.

There was no argument for the shutdown itself that a person unblindered by political fantasies should be obliged to respect,

Show me the argument that presents an ethical obligation of the Republican House of Representatives to fund Obama's broken campaign promises.

IOW, stand up for principle, and the GOP-e will pronounce the effort doomed, stab you in the back and side with the RATS against you, then cheer your “failure” and say how stupid you were to try.

“inflicting modest-but-real harm on the economy...”*

In the service of fighting the real-and-great harm being done to the the economy by Obama and his Obama(don’t)Care.

*The words of a dullard.
