Dem ‘Referendum’ on Tea Party Fizzles: Booker Margin in N.J. Barely Half of Obama’s in 2012
National Review Online ^

Posted on 10/17/2013 9:14:38 AM PDT by bryan999

Democrats did everything they could to portray yesterday’s special election for a Senate seat in New Jersey as a referendum on Republicans and the Tea Party. They clearly fell short of their expectations as Democrat Cory Booker underperformed his showing in almost all the polls, and wound up winning by only 10.3 points. By contrast, President Obama won New Jersey by 18 points just last November. At the same time, Democratic senator Robert Menendez cruised to a 19-point victory over a veteran moderate Republican state senator.

In a video released on Monday, President Obama had urged people to vote for Democrat Cory Booker “to send a message to the entire country about what kind of leadership we expect from our representatives in Congress, that we’re better than the shutdown politics we’ve seen in Washington.” Booker himself endlessly referred to Republican Steve Lonegan’s time as head of the state’s chapter of Americans for Prosperity, a tea-party-aligned group.

But Booker’s strategy didn’t seem to work and may even have energized Lonegan’s base. Booker had a 35-point lead only six weeks ago. A Rutgers-Eagleton poll released just last Monday still showed him with at 58 percent to 36 percent lead. Quinnipiac’s poll released on Tuesday had Booker with a 14-point lead. Only the Monmouth University poll that came out on Monday properly pegged Booker with a ten-point lead.

Losing by 10 or losing by 35 really has the same outcome - losing. NJ is about as likely to vote in a “real” Republican in a statewide election as California.

Let them underestimate us, it will be to our advantage.

How can they say that the Tea Party fizzled when they are blaming the Tea Party for everything ? or that the Tea Party has gained much power ? .. it does not jive.

Apparently a majority of NJ voters decided they want the entire state to look like Newark. They must not be very bright.

Indeed, it is a distinction without a difference.

Glad you posted this article!!! It says it all!!! I really discount the naysayers on this site...and move on to the next challenge to restore Freedom and Greatness to our American nation. Got no time at all for weepers, naysayers, negatives...period!! We are in a protracted conflict and we are alive, asea and moving forward to victory!!!

I read this article early this morning....but I had already done my homework and realized what a massive shift in New Jersey that Steve Lonegan brought about. Much Kudos, Mr. Lonegan!!! Can you Imagine that Mr. Lonegan, with literally no financial support or backing from the “Establishment” Republican, RINOs & his own Governor Christie, garned almost 600,000 votes in “Blue” New Jersey!!! An unbelievable feat...to say the least!!!

Yes....folks, Conservatives can be competitive and conservatives can win. Had Lonegan had the support he should have had, he clearly would have beaten Cory Booker!!! End of story!!! Freepers, Conservatives, onward!!!

Obama/Reid/McConnell gained nothing but a few weeks of nothing!!! The protracted conflict goes on!!! 2014 is just around the corner!!!

The state still elects Christie. At least for pseudo Republicans; victory is possible.

After supporting Schwartzenegger, O'Donnell and Scott Brown; all maverick hopefuls: what's the big deal?

Two won, one lost. All three lost as far as I can tell.

“Apparently a majority of NJ voters decided they want the entire state to look like Newark. They must not be very bright.”

They don’t look at the impact on the state; they are looking at the federal level. When it comes to the state level, they would never elect a non-white from either party. Christie should win re-election easily; the cities don’t pick our governors.

As long as the media trumpets that Booker is a saint and Lonegan is the Grand Inquisitor, Lonegan never had a chance. Ask other Repubs destroyed by the same strategy (like Mitt Romney).

It may be more sinister than that. Like most Americans today, they want the guy who will bring home the most pork. This is why government spending will never decrease until we hit rock bottom.

Maybe, but we’ve had Dem Senators for 40 years and they haven’t reversed the downward spiral of the state with enough pork. NJ is a visibly deteriorating state (decaying roads, crumbling schools, etc.); the tax dollars have been squandered.
