As more key powers are transferred to Brussels, it poses an existential question for central governments. …

“In my opinion, national central governments will become less important and will lose more power. They will become more and more impotent,” says Franz Schausberger, founder of the Austria-based Institute of the Regions of Europe.

To compensate, he notes, “regions have to become stronger, so that the citizens can strengthen their identity and participate in regional and local democracy.” …

IOW, give the regional governors direct control over their territories . . . and sweep the last remnants of the old republics away.

Although that phrase is well used, it seems backwards. What we think they are pushing for is a one government world. Which will never happen, no matter how we put it.

Regarding the soveregnity of nations, the EU today is like the US before the Civil War. It can be argued that in those days a Governor had more power than the president, and people thought of themselves as Virginians or New Yorkers first, and US citizens second - a distant second.

Let’s see what it takes before the EU comes to mean, relative to it’s internal states, what US now means. We’re in a different world now. It’s possible the EU may lose it’s “civil war”. And make no mistake, it may not involve actual guns, but such a test will come.

Regionalism - same plan in play in the US. Archibald Roberts was on this case decades ago.

I agree. However, regarding the soveregnity of nations, the EU today is like the US before the Civil War.

It can be argued that in those days a Governor had more power than the president, and people thought of themselves as Virginians or New Yorkers first, and US citizens second - a distant second.

They’ve been talking about it openly for decades, too. The EU even has a Committee of the Regions.
