First of all, a lot of cars have gps. That means if you steal a car, the owner knows exactly where you are. Second, all the car electronics talk to each other and use passwords. That is if you steal a radio and put it in an identical car, it will not work because the car knows it is the wrong radio using the wrong password.
Third, a lot of cars can be disabled by remote control.
Cal needs to move mom to a better area. Then get her a gun.

If it had happened to me I would simply have another reflex action: Reaching down to the pouch in my truck door and pulling out my 9mm buddy.
Being intelligent, it’s always loaded with the clip (none in the chamber) and does not have a trigger lock (so that you can actually use it in a rapid response emergency) and it is not locked in the glove box. It’s simply there, ready to use within a micro-second, not minutes.
Also, by being an “old fart” I would shoot him right in the face and claim that I was afraid of my life being taken since I was “old and feeble” and could not protect myself against that “brute” and might be killed. A good story to keep in mind even though I am tough as nails and physically can beat the stuffing out of most anyone.
