This is a huge opportunity for the Mormons to get some great public relations and do recruiting. Each Mormon family is supposed to stock provisions enough for six months in case of disaster. The church itself likely has warehouses full of food.

They also have the logistics to distribute it. They could likely create a statewide equivalent of EBT in short order, which would be ridiculously honest compared to EBT, plus they would likely get the full support of the state of Utah, which could bulk purchase farm surplus to augment the system.

The source is Fox in Salt Lake. It’s they who focused on the impact in their own back yard. If you read beyond the headline, it says ALL states.

The message needs to immediately go out to state governments to buy up as much surplus food as they can right now, particularly from local farmers. Crops are coming in, so there may be some surplus crops as well, that can be purchased cheaper.

While states probably do not have the time to set up their own food relief programs before November 1, they can distribute food through existing, non-federal programs, until they do.
