I’m for em too. I really like the idea instant runoff voting (where you rank the candidates) where there’s no need for a 2nd election but regular top-2 runoffs are okay too. We should have them for all GOP primaries as well.
But without them third parties on the right on bad news and smart people, who passed math class in 3rd grade, are gonna stay away from them.
The right was divided in Canada during the 90’s, the result, easy Liberal party majorities in Parliament. In 1912 the GOP was split, the result, Woodrow Wilson wins an electoral college landslide with fewer votes than the democrats received in 1908 and they win 2/3s of the House. Epic fail.
As the aftermath of the default sinks in and the attacks of the Tea Party intensify....
Pay attention locally and in your state.
Banning a third party or is the GOP running in abject fear of itself?
Yes—the right was divided in Canada in the 90’s—but the end result was a much more conservative Conservative party that has won the last three elections. Better to lose big and rebuild than lose close and get worse and worse.
The last time we “lost big” was in 2008, they only had 2 years of total control but from that we got Obamacare.
A division on the level and for the duration that Canada had would result in a gigantic super-majority democrat Congress for a decade. That’s jumping out the pan and into the fire. There would be nothing left to rebuild, we would be France.
And it’s foolish to think anyone could succeed in creating a third party and then have it supplant the GOP, that’s about 100 or more times harder than winning GOP primaries, and we can’t do that we can’t do anything, think about it. Pie in the sky fantasy.
Nominating and electing conservative Republicans over RINOs and democrats is the only viable option for saving this country. RINOs are a slow death, division is a fast suicide.
As for Canada the CPC is to the right of where the old PCs were in the early 90’s but I wouldn’t exactly call them “much” more conservative. The majority of them would be CINOs by our standards. I like Harper and think he’s a conservative at heart but he’s forced to compromise a lot in his liberal country. Obama democrats with supermajority control would be like giving the NPD a huge majority in parliament. It’s so much easier in their system to repair damage because power is all concentrated in the House of Commons.
Socially, the present CPCs are somewhat better than the old PCs, but still slightly to the left of Bush. Fiscally, they are well to the right of 80% of the Republicans when it comes to balanced budgets (and likely immigration as well), and further right than the old PCs. For that matter, while I am not sure about Justin Trudeau, I think that Chretien would be well to the right of Bush when it comes to balancing the budget, and I don’t think that the NDP would be as bad as you might think fiscally—remember that Canada got into deep debt trouble in the 90’s and actually learned something—and federalism is actually in better shape in Canada than the U.S.—which means that there are some expenses carried by the provinces that the Feds will not increase their contribution to.
On immigration Canada has the luxury of Mexicans not being able to just walk in.
AFAIK most countries that aren’t falling apart crapholes don’t (possibly they couldn’t in they wanted to) share our ridiculous debt policy. Just keep hiking that debt ceiling, keep running those deficits, brag when you lower them slightly. Put it on your VISA, worry about it later.
So in that sense, yes there are plenty of socialist governments that are ‘better’ that Bush in that regard. Bush was a real POS if you ask me.
The article tells the story of how Hickenlooper ended up governor of Colorado (split conservative votes)...there are also examples of more conservative candidates ousting a RINO and winning the GOP primary, and then crashing and burning in the general elections. BUT, I agree, it's the only way!
It seems the Ohio legislation would help prevent the "suicidal" vote split? BUT, more people need to vote in the primaries, IMHO...
Hinclepooper actually topped 50%, but one GOOD candidate could have beat him.
I hope we have better candidates across the board for 2014...
