Emanuel speed cameras may bring in more revenue than expected
Chicago Tribune ^ | 10/11/13 | Bill Ruthhart

Chicago's first speed cameras at just four locations issued warnings to more than 233,000 speeders in 45 days, violations that would have totaled $13.8 million in tickets, according to data released by the city today.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has touted his speed camera program as a way to improve traffic safety for children near the city's parks and schools, but the early warning violations from Chicago's first speed cameras are the latest indicator that the fledgling program could be a financial windfall for the city.

Emanuel has projected $15 million in speed camera revenue for the remainder of 2013, with cameras at the first four locations beginning to issue fines Oct. 21 and the city planning to install more than 100 speed cameras at 50 locations by the end of the year. The Tribune reported in August that the city could gain far more in ticket revenue, based on the results of camera tests last December by the finalists for the speed camera contract.

Can you pay the fine with your gubmint issued EBT card?

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

No - they’ll simply cross-reference your EBT ID # and you’ll never get a ticket in the first place.

Reason #4,907 to never, ever live or do business in Chicago.

if watching “the first 48” on amc is any indication, those homeboys don’t have licenses or registered cards anyway, so those tickets will be “returned to sender”, address unknown, no such number.

Those infernal things got installed in Albuquerque, NM under a Democrat Mayor and operated for awhile.

They were continually vandalized until finally a Republican Mayoral candidate promised to get rid of them.

He was elected and he did.

He just got re-elected for a second term.

They're hanging tires filled with gasoline over these things in the UK and destroying them one-by-one.

These things won't survive, even in Chicago.

Thats almost 1 ticket per camera per minute the entire 45 days. Why I get the feeling the libtards are playing fast and loose with the numbers. Probably sending obamacare sign up applications with the tickets too /sarc

This is in the short term. In the long-term, as everybody figures out where the cameras are along their route, they will be able to avoid the fines most times.

"~violations that would have totaled $13.8 million in tickets,~"

It sounds like another government bean counter is trying to secure a job.

The fine goes to the owner of the vehicle, not necessarily the driver. Unconstitutional as can be but they don’t care about little details like that.

Anytime the government says they are doing something for safety reasons they really mean it’s for increased revenue and control.

Yep lots of speeding in Chicago. You are using four cameras but I suspect there are more than four
cameras at the four locations.

Lots of people in Chicago just don’t obey laws...ha. Due to surgery I am now seeing impaired. So when I walk up to crossroad here I’m very careful. I wait until I’m sure no one will run red light or some crazy bicyclist won’t run me down. I’m also very careful on the subways. If I see Amish people acting up I quickly get on other car.

Revenue is always the first and foremost reason and usually the only reason these cameras are ever deployed.

Typical idiot cop thinking. INstead of increasing revenue by encouraging the tempo of business we are going to crack down further on it. Speeding tickets should be used to help drivers who partake in the economy go home safer, but instead it is used to reduce emissions and harass business. Go figure. Good luck greedy stupid Chicago. Your cameras are a sign of distrust and neglect.

In the long term, the politicians that installed them get fired, and the cameras go away. That's the trend, anyway in the US.

I wish people would take care of them in the People’s Republic of Tucson. They are still all over and I just read another story (recent one) of manipulated yellow lights (being shortened, to catch more people).

As everybody figures out where the cameras are...we here at FR will not only have to keep a tally of the Chicago dead...we’re gonna have to start counting the killed-by-gunshot traffic cams.

Yup, standard procedure.

They shortened the yellow to 3 seconds in Albuquerque. They got caught and that is what precipitated the demise.
