Full carts abandoned at Chicago grocery stores were a common sight as shoppers in Illinois and many other states have been unable to use their food stamp debit cards.
More than two million people in Illinois use a so-called Link Card. That's one in six residents in the state. So when suddenly the system went down Saturday morning many customers just walked out of the store.
"Now I'm going to have to unfortunately do the fast food thing now. No cooking tonight," said Link Card user Rob Lee.
"That's how people starve," said shopper Sean Wright. "People starve if they don't have the Link to feed their children, to feed their family with."

People starve when they don’t work.
LINK ain’t the problem.
It’s pitiful to see so many millions of Americans thoroughly dependent on EBT. This is where Democrat policy leads. Some Democrats might very well care about these people, but making them wards of the state is NOT the answer. What in the world is going to happen to these people when the EBT cards truly fail? If we don’t start weaning people off of government, it WILL fail, and the progressives will be responsible for the deaths of many more millions like the ones killed in the 20th Century in the left’s bid to fundamentally transform other nations. We must succeed. We must restore our liberty, our self reliance, and our human dignity.
“Food Stamp Debit Card”
One time I was overseas and I went through the check out with a cart full of food. I went to pay with a credit card and the checker insisted I had a pin. I didn't have a pin. After a round or two of arguing in English he didn't really understand, I gave up. I was pissed but I humbly went back with my full cart and put all the stuff back. It was completely embarrassing but not as embarrassing as leaving a cart there for some innocent bystander to put away.
Entitlement mentality at it's finest.
It has never and will never occur to these people that the money is gone.
When I worked grocery I put away enough carts of food.
“People starve if they don’t have the Link to feed their children, to feed their family with.”
I fail to see the problem.
Now there’s a “shutdown” I can get behind.
2 Thessalonians 10-12:
10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.
12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.
What will happen to them? FEMA camps is the only solution I can think of.
Leaving the food in the carts...the health department may condemn all the meats.
1 out of 6 people in Illinois is on food stamps. And everyone of them voted for Obama.....three or four times.
riri: “Classless.”
Um. They’re leeches. That’s not exactly classy to start with. I’m sympathetic. Truly I am, but stealing from other people is no good way to go through life.
Excellent. Smithers!Boehnor! Fetch me my pipe!"
They’re going to do a fast food run because they can’t afford a full cart of groceries? What’s wrong with a 99 cent jar or tin of pasta sauce, a 99 cent box of pasta, and a buck bag of frozen broccoli? It makes a ridiculous quantity of food compared to three McDoubles.
