A Short Term Debt Ceiling
REDSTATE ^ | October 10th, 2013 at 11:51 AM | Erick Erickson

Posted on 10/10/2013 4:24:06 PM PDT by JSDude1

It seems the GOP has taken a hint and will continue the fight on Obamacare by punting the debt ceiling discussion six weeks to Thanksgiving.

I think this is wise, though I think the GOP should not do a clean increase. They should tie it to a full faith and credit act or something to stop future market jitters over this stuff. The GOP should not establish a precedent of debt ceiling increases without offsets of some kind. Nor should they allow the Democrats to act as if the House of Representatives should just be Barack Obama’s rubber stamp.

But we must keep the fight on Obamacare. If the CR and debt ceiling were combined, we could not hold the line.

This now lets us hold the line and get the conversation back to Obamacare.

Those who say conservatives have no strategy have none of their own. Our strategy is simple — hold the line. Those who say that is no strategy have none of their own. Do I think we will get Obamacare defunded? That’s our ask. We negotiate from there.

‘ve never had any confidence they would do anything about Obamacare other than keep it as an open issue so it will become a battleground issue for 2014.

If they can’t get some concession from Obama on the debt ceiling, how is what Ericson proposes any different than just kicking the can down the road?

Don’t let up now:

U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515
(202) 224-3121
TTY: (202)-225-1904

MAN THE BARRICADES AND KEEP THOSE CALLS COMING!..

We are winning that is WHY they are scared, that is why we have gotten as far as we have; and that is WHY the left is fighting so hard against the people..

With prayer and providence we will prevail!~

If they attach the “Full Faith and Credit Act” to it, then it shifts the debate and momentum back to Obamacare defund/delay.

We can then extract REAL concessions on the Debt limit AFTER we’ve won on the CR.

One issue at a time (without a “grand bargain”) and it helps the “low-information” voters to get their heads around the debate!

The last I heard, Obama has rejected the 6-week plan.

But the strategy by the GOP was, as this article notes, very wise. If we end up with a negotiated settlement that combines the Obamacare and the Debt Ceiling issues we are going to lose on the Obamacare front. The 6-week plan would allow a separation of those issues.

...jeez!..I’m so tired of nearly all pundits missing the point,....... the dimocrats passed this law without one Republican vote! Fortunately, they do not have a majority in all 3 branches today but if they did they could, if they wanted, pass a law to build an apartment project on the moon!

Then, if they lose their majority in the house, the next house COULD, if they wanted to, say “fine, you guys go build your apartment project on the moon but you ain’t getting any tax payer dollars to build it with or loan guarantees of any kind either”! No worries though, your Hollywood buddies will loan you the money!

Problem is, our current house of reps only barely “gets it”! They could cave any day!

It really is a hill to die on. If Obamacare goes through, then no political action will mean anything in this country until we are remade with a new Constitution (if that ever happens). It’s simply over if the government gains the pure power of life and death over their political opposition.

The GOP is going to cave- it was inevitable from the start of this that they would.

The good news in that is that, after they do, the only story in the news will be the fiasco of the Obamacare debut.

Right now, that shutdown is using up most of the news oxygen. Honestly, if Obama were smart he’d refuse to make any concessions at all and keep the shutdown going for a while longer.

Because once this is over, Obamacare’s debut will be the news story.

I agree with the writer, get the debt ceiling off the front page and get back to talking about the failure of Obamacare. Open season starts this month - time is on our side ...

Tie the CR the debt increase all of it to passing a budget. Five years in violation of the constitution is too long. Once we have a budget then and only then can we act. It is what grown-ups do.

Take a look at this page from the Poll. It shows the preference for a Republican Majority vs. a Democrat Majority in the House. Look close at the 10/10 (October 2010) figure. The Dems lead 46% to 44%. How's that for an accurate poll? If you remember the 2010 election you will know the answer. I don't trust this poll. I think it is about as accurate today as it was in 2010 when we all knew that it was going to be a GOP landslide in the November election.

Obama’s people can’t hold out - they have no savings. Did you see Elenor Holmes Norton in his face yesterday? Her people are feeling the shutdown. We can win this ...

The Next step for the House ought to be to pass the 6 week extension anyway (with the “Full Faith and Credit” act attached); then let the jittery markets, Wallstreet, and Big Business force Obama to accept this....

Boehner doesn’t have the votes for the 6 week extension. Conservatives have already told him they will vote no.

Absolutely. Make Harry Reid table yet another good idea.

Boehner doesn’t have the GOP votes to pass the 6 week extension.

He made his pilgrimage to Obama hoping to get a go-ahead from Obama for the House Democrats to vote along with the RINOS. That failed.

Boehner can not pass the 6 week extension without Democrat votes.
