On Monday, former vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, suggesting that Republicans drop all Obamacare demands in their push for a deal on the debt ceiling and a continuing resolution to fund the government. Instead, he suggested that Republicans look for a bargain on entitlement reform, a pet project of his, as well as tax reform. “This isn't a grand bargain. For that, we need a complete rethinking of government's approach to helping the most vulnerable, and a complete rethinking of government's approach to health care. But right now, we need to find common ground. We need to open the federal government. We need to pay our bills today—and make sure we can pay our bills tomorrow. So let's negotiate an agreement to make modest reforms to entitlement programs and the tax code,” Ryan wrote.

I would not rule out the possibility.
For all of Ryan’s faults, he gained a lot of exposure on the budget debates when he completely called out Obama and made the guy look like a mega chump on the Congressional floor. Perhaps Obama, in his Chicago gangster mentality, took it as a personal dis and used the IRS and NSA to have Ryan “taken care of” so to speak? Sort of liek a mafia boss being told by a rival that he is gonna start encroaching on his turf? And so Ryan’s talk of caving and compromise is a result of this?
Again, can’t rule out that this is at least partly why Ryan has been acting like this lately.
I am saying that this is a political move to throw this out to the media. He is playing the same game as Obama. Make a general statement that sounds like you're trying to work with the other side. When in reality you are only willing to work with the other side if you get everything you want.
That was basically what Obama said and now Ryan is responding with a similar comment.
I would concur with that. I also think that this should not come as a surprise to anyone who has ever been closely following Ryan; from the start he has always been at best a hybrid between authentic conservative and GOP establishment type. His support base, i think, often came from the fact that he was often way ahead of there most other Republicans were in terms of actually articulating ideas.
Ryan simply needs to STFU from now until after the 2014 election. And BTW, I hope this turncoat gets primaried & thrown out, and let a true conservative serve in his place.
You got that absolutely right! The dumbest buffoon in Congress (House & Senate) was and is Joe "Stand up Chuck" Bite-me Biden. But with his obnoxious behavior & smirking & cutting Ryan off at will, Biden made mince meat out of Ryan, and Ryan just stood there with a stupid grin on his face for most of the debate. What a loser! And I mean Paul Ryan!
The “manufacturing” of dirt is the most frightening. And if “someone” tells the media something about somebody, the media will run with it. To hell with checking facts.
The only “Common Ground” I want to have with the Democrats is that ground in which we bury them forever.

Personally, I agree with your strategy. Let the people get the full wind of this Affordable Health Care Act and they will rise up. Ryan also knows, that the democrats won’t go for any tax or entitlement reform...
I say, using Obamacare as leverage is a good idea. Let’s take it off the table...but ask for cuts in return.

Fair enough. I concur that the vast majority of the time, even when we elect leaders with the explicit purpose of representing our interests, they inevitably become career politicians. They set out to change DC and instead, DC changes them, that certainly happens time and time again.
That said, there will always still be limits to what politicians of any kind, even the most principled and fearless, can do for us. And so relying on any of them too accomplish too many of our goals will end on more and more letdowns. I had thought this was one of the fundamental principles the Tea Party was founded on in the first place to be honest.
To be fair though, that would have happened to the vast majority of Republicans provided they were not experienced in dealing the the Biden style of debate. SO I did not really hold that against him so much as that was more lack of experience.
But I concur that his stance now is problematic on many levels.
