So, if my husband and I have been diligently saving and contributing to 401Ks for our retirement, we are going to be punished by fewer benefits?? APPALLING! Just give me the money back that I have put into SS for the last 45 years!

But we’ll still be spending billions on the Afghanistan war. I don’t hear Republicans calling for any drawback in overseas military adventures — they only want to cut the benefits that taxpayers have paid for out of their paychecks their whole lives. Cut these benefits in order to keep our foreign wars going?

SS has been putting out more than it takes in, for many months now. It’s just a matter of time before Government comes up with a “compresensive overhall” and reduces benefits. As for 401K’s and IRA’s...Obama and his buddies have been eyeing that money for years. They have started the plan to get their hands on that money in earnest. Unions will lead the charge.

Social Security is a massive suicide pact and there is no stopping it. If we stopped issuing new cards today, dropped everyone from the rolls who has not paid into the system yet and allowed no one else to sign up for Social Security Disability it would still bankrupt the system, just faster. So many Americans from every end of the political spectrum are absolutely dependent on the system that any politician who tried to change it will get pilloried, as is happening on this thread. It's a regressive tax that has already been spent. Might as well ask for your income taxes, sales taxes and property taxes back. Ain't gonna happen.

Want to change the system? Fine. Make everyone, not just those who earn less than $120,000 a year, pay 15%. See if that flies.

Social Security is ALREADY “means tested” through a tax on SS benefits.

Medicare is ALREADY means tested, with higher part B and Part D premiums, for single taxpayers above $87K and married couples over $117K.

Social security is only a “benefit” if you get disability or one of the other handout programs sapping SS. If you paid into it your whole life, and get it back when you are old with the pathetic 2% interest the gov. calculates it is a joke to say it is a “benefit.”

Any means testing for returning someone’s social security is simply theft. Cut off the free loaders first and then we’ll talk.

You haven’t “put” a damn cent into Social Security. You’ve just paid an additional income tax called FICA that has gone to then-current recipients, with no real promise of any future benefits to yourself.

How about regular drug testing for Welfare, Food Stamp, Section 8, and Social Security Disability ?

its not an earned benefit, baby

once it’s means-tested, it’s just another tax

If it’s means tested, it’s welfare. I would find it shockingly immoral to change the rules on those who are retired or who are approaching retirement. Now, if they offered to buy me out by returning my money that I paid in, I would take that in a heartbeat. I’d also like to see the eligibility age raised (gradually, and for those more than 10 (15?) years from retirement), to reduce the demand on the system. I can’t see the far left agreeing to either of the proposals that I like. They hate fairness and common sense.

A reasonable approach might be to have SS tax be paid on all income, instead of being cut off at a certain point.

This is beyond bizarre. Retirees and near-retirees have already been hammered by low interest rates on savings.

I know an elderly woman who was a stay at home mom and never worked a day in her life. She collects SS benefits in the neighborhood of $1400-$1700/mo. WTF is up with that? Does she collect because her deceased spouse worked his entire life? How does the Social Security system ever get ahead if people who never paid into it are collecting lifetime checks, or piggybacking on their dead spouses benefits?

These types of payouts need to stop. And our government needs to STOP PROMOTING FOOD STAMPS TO ILLEGAL ALIENS.

Means testing is very bad. It’s just another income/wealth redistribution scheme. You are required to contribute, but if you earn “too much” you get nothing out.

Ryan has been pushing for confiscation of all private retirement and pension plans since he was elected. I was made aware of this when he made a play to confiscate the railroad retirement fund (fully funded by employees with NO government contributions). As a railroader, I pay 12percent of every paycheck into railroad retirement. I don’t want or need anything from the feds, yet they want to to take all of my retirement money that I payed away from me. If you think your 401k, IRA, or retirement plan is safe, think again. The fedgovbank monster is hungry, and it will kill to feed.

It's all coming together.
The "leaders" favor making illegals into citizens because their labors will become taxable and they will be paying into Social Security. We have aborted away 40 million American citizens who would otherwise be employed taxpayers - we have to get revenue from somewhere.

They will be coming for your private retirement money. It will start by mandating a small percentage be placed into "safe" (but low interest bearing) government bonds. That will be the camel's nose under the tent. The percentage will increase to a larger percentage until it is mandated that they need to be converted to 100% government backed.

There is no getting this ship righted. Our side has its own defectives who are bent on government's survival at any cost.

This would work an outright theft or confiscation worthy of the worst communist dictatorship. Impossible to imagine Ryan could have anything to do with it.

"Just give me the money back that I have put into SS for the last 45 years! "

Don't forget about the payments made into the system on your behalf by your employer(s).
