Allegations Accuse The Chicago “Blackhawks” Name To Be Racist
BlackhawksUp ^ | Oct 09, 2013 | Skylar Peters

Recent reports surfacing about a particular NFL franchise, the Washington Redskins, created a minor stir throughout the sports world, bringing the Chicago Blackhawks in the argument as well.

What unites the two teams, you might ask? It is the name, which is suggestive of a native group. Not only are the Redskins and Blackhawks involved, but another NFL franchise, the Kansas City Cheifs, and the Cleavland Indians of the MLB. Besides those four main teams, are over 150 other clubs in various sports across North America. Many activist groups for indigenous people have called out these clubs on occasion, with little success.

[ snip ]

Should we be worried? No. A famous study by Sports Illustrated back in 2002 found that “83% of American Indian respondents to a poll said that professional teams should NOT stop using Indian nicknames, mascots, or symbols.” Even though it is over a decade old, feelings are still largely the same......

You mean a black hawk isn’t a bird? Just change the logo and they’re good.

I don't think that wold satisfy the rat leftists. Check my tag line. Go Hawks.

The Chiefs are named for an old white guy, probably even a greater offense.

a fan contest determined the new "Chiefs" name in honor of Mayor Harold Roe Bartle's nickname that he acquired in his professional role as Scout Executive of the St. Joseph and Kansas City Boy Scout Councils and founder of the Scouting Society, the Tribe of Mic-O-Say

I want to complain about the use of “Vikings”. And, while I’m here, about “Raiders” and “Pirates”. Naming ballteams after these peaceful, commerce loving groups is offensive. I would respectively propose a name of each of these to: DemonRats.

A state university, where I did graduate work, came under fire several years ago because their school mascot was ‘Redmen’. The U has a large percentage of Native American students.

Like the current angst of a few, that U changed its mascot to RiverHawks.

==

How many years before PETA or a similar ‘save the riverhawk’ group complains and the mascot gets changed to the petunias or some such?

[There was a time that remark could have been considered sarcasm. In the new pc world, the current mascot MUST be offending someone, somewhere, somehow.]

PC is winning, one mascot change at a time, one disliked word at a time, one complaint at a time.

PC whines allow a majority of a few to cause changes over a minority of many.

We are truly in a bizarro world.

There are so many names which are offensive based on these criteria.

Buffalo Bills is offensive to the memory of Buffalo Bill Cody.

Milwaukee Brewers is offensive to real brewers.

Dallas Cowboys is offensive to real cowboys.

San Diego Padres and New Orleans Saints are offensive to Catholics.

Chicago White Sox is racist, obviously.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Boston Celtics are ethnic slurs.

New England Patriots must be offensive to liberals who are aghast at any thought of patriotism.

I’m sure there are others, but you get the point, that liberals can find many others besides Indian nicknames to be offended about.

And aren’t all the animal nicknames offensive to animals and PETA liberals????

Go Wings, but I get the drift. LOL I like the Black Hawk logo. ‘Rats disgust me. Wish they’d leaves sports alone (I’m female and the pink football thing is more disgust), heck, they cannot even let kids play tag on the playground. How are they going to learn sports and sportsmanship, have their parents pay for it all?

The Wings have a long, convoluted history leading back to the auto industry, but it could just as easily be a Native American symbol.

It has little to do with the name. It has to do with the power to cause change. They feign being offended at something, get it changed, and declare a win. Little successes lead to bigger successes (that is, more power) later.

I'm showing my age because I'd be a lot more impressed with this person's comments if they were spelled correctly, sigh! Chief and Cleveland are the proper spellings, but then again we learned yesterday about how dumb Americans are in the OECD test.

As for names, we once again learn that Political Correctness boils down to victimology and intolerant people with far too much time to gripe!

I'd kinda like to see them play along and rename these teams to names that are suggestive of white people.

Or, use some of 'their' language/words -- The Teabaggers, for example.

Wouldn't they squeal like stuck hogs.

A former CT/Hartford Whaler player, Joel Queenville coaches the team. Never knew of that until they won the Stanley Cup.

A name can’t be racist. This comes from the left’s dogma that all American institutions are racist.

Well as a Muslim I am offended that San Francisco and San Diego are named after Christians. Harumph. They need to change the names of those cities.

Ok, I’m not really a camel jockey...err Muslim.

As much as I detest PETA, I take my hat off to their PR machine. While of course they work with a compliant and fellow traveler media, they still manage to get coverage all out of proportion to their size and advocates. Another of course is that naked female bodies will always attract cameras!

My favorite PETA idiocy of the past in the renaming field is the 'effort' (publicity) to get the town of Fishkill, NY to change its name. Actually, it shocked me that this happened in 1996 so it just goes to show that even someone who would like PETA to stand for PEOPLE EATING TASTY ANIMALS remembers some thing that far back!

Re: Teabaggers, for example.

I like it.

Since the term "teabagger" refers to a homosexual act. Wouldn't this then open the door to other homosexual names?

The Texas/NY Rangers could become the Rump Rangers, for example.

I still can't figure this PC thing out when it comes to homosexual references:

I can still say that something "sucks", but I can't call something "gay".

Why is that?
