Families throw off the cones at Badlands National Park in South Dakota
Twitchy ^ | 10/06/13 | Twitchy Staff

Tax-paying, hard-working families aren’t letting White House shutdown politics stop them from enjoying America’s beauty. They’re defying the orange cones at Mount Rushmore. They’re breaching the barrycades at Zion National Park. And now, the Badlands of South Dakota.

Noelle Bruno tweets that she and her family made it through Mount Rushmore despite the White House obstacles:

The entire federal government should be closed, not just the parks.

Listen Bub. You cant close the ENTIRE government unless you dont believe in the constitution. And as far as the parks are concerned. Yes all services such as visitor information and tourist stores should be shut down if they are RUN BY THE PARK SERVICE. But ALL access to these parks should remain open. End of Story. These places were and are for the public and are the taxpayers places..NOT YOUR GOD DAMMED GOVERNMENTS. Understand now Bub?

Furthermore BUB. The reason the park ranger are doing what they are doing is that it will be found out that they are not really needed and fear they WILL lose their cushy little jobs riding all over the Effn place in those pickups provided by you and I the taxpayers of this country. And nearly all these assholes are eco freaks and really think they are above any law and can do what ever the hell they want.

“Obama’s tactics seem to be working.”

YOU are cooperating with Obama. These parks do not need to be shutdown. He wants this to be painful for everyone and you agree by accepting such stupidity should happen. He even has park rangers illegally shutting down roadways to prevent people from being able to view the parks from the roadways. Really? THAT’S what you support?

'We the People" are the government.

It time we put those bastards in Washington in their place.

When the feds put up orange cones on a state highway in South Dakota the state patrol should have picked them up and arrested the jack booted thugs who put them out for littering and disturbing the orderly flow of traffic.

My problem with Obama is that he is going ahead with the implementation of Obamacare and is launching military strikes in Somalia without any funds appropriated by congress.

Ah ha! You forgot to mention that he is spending public funds without authorization to engage in political theater by blocking public roads and parking lots, doing the same to private parking lots (Mount Vernon), and denying access to areas that are open 24/7 without Park Service presence. He has even closed the Ocean. All of this at great expense to gain the same political points that Clinton received when we watched the TV reports of people turned away from Yellowstone facilities during that shutdown.

There is a great deal of difference between closing facilities that must be manned and operated with public funds and closing areas that can remain open without expenditure of public funds. People understand this distinction and are not standing for it.

I suspect that you might be part of the diversion.

Well, if they get lost or injured hiking around mount Rushmore they shouldn’t call the government for help. Some folks don’t seem to understand that the federal government is shutdown. I’m sure they’ll have a chance to visit the federal parks and monuments in the near future. But they shouldn’t insist in visiting right now.

That's the most beautifully composed articulation of serfdom I've ever read on Free Republic.

Thanks for playing!

I disagree.

Parks main facilities operated by Park Rangers can have their doors closed and locked but there is little need to try and spend money to erect extensive barricades and then man them to keep people away from the closed property in general. That is what Obama has ordered.

Disappointingly we have no management resignations in the National Park Service over such an over reach.

We have the Federal Government spending more money for these actions than they spend just having staff in normal levels in the properties in a general ranger mode to prevent vandalism.

If the parks are left wide open, there’s nothing to prevent people from going in and vandalizing the place.

And there is now? Expecting the Barrycades to stop that is like expecting a “Gun Free Zone” sign to stop shootings. Did Teddy Roosevelt want National Parks set aside to protect it from the people, or for the people?

The other question of mine is this: was the federal government doing much in the first place?

For example, since I'm not near the badlands, the government shutdown closed Lake Lowell Wildlife refuge here in Idaho. I do not know of any one who has ever seen anyone in the employ of the federal government out there. The gates are opened and closed by the folks from Idaho Fish and Game, on the state payroll.

With the exception of the occasional Forest Ranger, the same applies to the vast wildernesses of the state. While I appreciate the work of the Rangers, their temporary absence causes no great pain.

It's pretty simple:

Teddy Roosevelt wanted the land saved for the “people” of America, not for the government. As long as these people don't litter and leave the place better than they found it; I think they can do without the government for a few days.

“This land is your land” was written in bitter sarcasm by known Stalin worshipper Woody Guthrie. He hated both capitalism & private land ownership and this song was his rant against the `status quo’.

Guthrie’s guitar was inscribed “This Machine Kills Fascists”.

It’s a happy tune when sung by the Kingston Trio but that wasn’t its original intent.

Anyway, the parks belong to us & not Emperor Barry.

A bit of history for you.... there have been many government shut downs in the past. In the 90s there was one for more than 20 days. Park areas with services were shut down but public areas were never closed nor was the national mall or fishing areas or portions of the ocean. Life went on.

Really? Get lost? On a state highway through a park? I’d say the odds are pretty low, like none.

Do you really think people are that helpless? Maybe some new generation is. If they are we need to let natural selection run its course.

Did you ever hear about Liberty? Ever hear the phrase, “It is better to die free than live as a slave.”?

Where did you come from? Why don’t you go back there? You might be better off. I know most of us would be without you.
