Camp Pendleton blaze sends plume over N. County

CAMP PENDLETON — A large fire on Camp Pendleton Saturday afternoon prompted evacuations at the base hospital and some housing, and sent up an enormous plume of black smoke that could be seen halfway across the county.

The blaze broke out about 12:45 p.m. near Lake O’Neil and caused minor damage to four buildings, base officials said.

Thirty-two patients were transported to hospitals off base during the fire. No new patients were being accepted late in the afternoon because of a power outage, officials said.

Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside took five intensive care and emergency room patients. Naval Medical Center San Diego, at Balboa Park, had received 17 patients, including surgical and pediatric cases, and mother-child couplets, said Sonja Hanson, public affairs officer for the medical center.

Base officials said patients that remained at the Camp Pendleton hospital were receiving care, and the hospital was not being threatened by the blaze as of late afternoon.

Families were evacuated from O’Neill Heights housing near Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, about 12 miles from the main gate. No injuries were reported.

“Everybody’s been displaced to Main Side,” said Maj. Amy Punzel, a spokeswoman for the base.

The displaced families were standing around, many with their pets, in whatever shade they could find near the gym and Country Store.

Initial reports had the fire burning northeast of the base hospital. Cal Fire and other North County fire agencies sent six air tankers, five helicopters and eight ground crews. A North County fire official said the fire was not a threat to Fallbrook.

About 250 acres had burned by 5 p.m., and the blaze was reported as 15 percent contained.

Pendleton officials said they did not know what caused the fire, which was not near training ranges.

Winds in the area Saturday afternoon were blowing between 24 mph and 36 mph. By late afternoon the wind direction shifted from the west to more of a traditional onshore breeze.

Fire near the WW area too, earlier reports were that WW battalion evacuated.

Several folks in Oside and San Clemente opening their doors to displaced Marine families!

Prayers UP!

With our “shutdown”, will they be allowed to attempt to fight the fire?

I noted in another article on this fire that the California dept was fighting the fire.

Pray that Governor Moonbeam not go too much further off that deep end...and do something rash...such as ordering a State Government Shutdown in Sympathy with the democraps

I hope their families can get into the Commissary for supplies, heard these were closed thanks to the idiots in D. C.

When the 2007 fires were raging on Camp Pendleton the Marines enlisted the help of Marines to battle the blazes. I'm sure Marines will not let a little thing like Government closure stop them "firefighting" on their base ;)

I hear that.
Just envisioning what diseased thinking the “leadership” will do next.
These are the same “leaders” who told the military to stand down as people died..
I’d expect similar in this from the Zero admin.
Which would cause a massive backlash at Pendleton.

God be with the firefighters out there.
And the devil take Zero.

There was speculation that CA’s fires (and possibly others in the West) were the work of terrorists. However, after that comment was made in the media .. suddenly it disappeared .. and no more comments.

Since the latest fire is at a Marine base, it makes me even more suspicious that these fires are being set on purpose.

That thought occurred to you as well?
Side thought for me was the admins talk of downsizing or eliminating the Marine Corps.

Exactly!!

I do believe the other fires in CA were also because of Santa Ana winds. I think that is what is making me curious about arson; it’s the perfect excuse.

It’s not just the Marine Corp this admin is attacking; I consider their conduct toward all our military as nothing more than spitting in their faces.

It’s known that ALL DICTATORS hate the military .. unless they control the military.

And .. I believe a lot of the attacks upon our military are done for the purpose of hurting the public - especially since the public loves and supports our military.

However, I truly believe these actions toward our military are going to come back and bite this admin - big time!

And .. I just had this thought today .. is this admin over-using the Seals .. hoping they’ll all be killed ..??

True.
But the pure vindictiveness in the statements about how the Corps has supposedly “outlived” its need speaks of deeper hatreds within this admin.
The Corps is being used as an “example”, I’m guessing to try and intimidate the other branches.

Yes, the SEALs are being over used.
I’m waiting for Jarret to betray this last group too.
