A certain shutdown narrative has become all-too-familiar: It is holding us back from gazing at the National Zoos pandas throughout the day and perusing the halls and walkways of our national museums and parks.
But for millions of the nations poor, the situation could soon be far more serious, and simply moving a gate or clicking on a link to another video wont solve their problems.
Though many of the programs that provide assistance to needy families and individuals like food stamps, Medicaid, and Medicare will continue running during the shutdown, the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is barely holding on.
The nearly $7 billion dollar program that provides access to food, formula, nutritional education, breast-feeding support, and health-care referrals to 9 million poor mothers, babies, and children is having to rely on $125 million in contingency funds from the USDA to continue operating throughout the month.
Douglas Greenaway, the president of the National WIC Association, a D.C. based nonprofit, calls the money a sneeze and warns that clinics will be forced to close their doors and end benefits if normal funding doesnt resume by the end of the month....

“Were going to have deaths in the country because of ObamaCare”
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
This may sound heartless and or crazy to many but...do you doubt that it was intended to be so? I absolutely cannot lead myself to believe for one instant that this Obamanation which should rightly be called the Unaffordable Don’t Give a Damn Act was designed by people who actually thought that it would result in FEWER deaths and even though I think most Democrat senators and representatives are as dumb as dirt I don’t think they voted for a “health care” bill that most couldn’t lift and had never even attempted to read out of a conviction that it actually would accomplish what they pretended it would. That leaves me only one possibility. They intended to destroy health care with full knowledge that many of the people they claimed to be helping would die as a result.
First off, I don't give a rats ass about these parasites They should have got an education (it's free) and a job.
Second, These moochers don't vote Republican, so why kiss their ass? Starve and die. The wagon needs lightened.
I told my friend to send her to an ER because they have to treat everyone regardless of if they can pay (Isn't the socialism that you espouse just grand?)
The girl had barely any money
1. 23 with 2 kids, she's not a girl.
2. Where are the babies daddies? Why are the rest of us forced to pay for her bad choices?
Maybe Time should focus on getting Harry and Barry to vote on and sign bills that will put Americans back to work. They should try doing their jobs instead of blackmailing Congress into doing things their way.
And while they’re at it, they could bring the Patriot Act up for a vote again. Barry has a little too much power over Americans. Americans are not the enemy.
In the middle of a bad divorce. Mediation is due next week or week after so no money from baby dad yet. Just was sharing about how Medicaid was stopped & Obamacare required without informing Medicaid recipients of new rules.
To anyone anywhere who voted for LIBs/DIMs
...Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
The world’smallest violin has just broke.
Total BS. Obamacare is not mandatory yet. And even if it were the ER HAS to provide service, no matter the ability to pay.
Tell the person spreading this story to do a little more homework.
Well, liberal elites will be better off... Doctors will stop seeing new patients under the current system - and move toward concierge medicine. Liberal elites will pay a doctor like they now pay their country club fees. For them ObamaCare has cleaned out the waiting room of all those middle class Americans who eat at places like Olive Garden.
Liberal elites are BETTER OFF.
The other highly dependable dem voters are inner city blacks. Their health care is now FREE and they don't have to wait in Hospital Emergency rooms for hours for care...
Underclass and inner city blacks are BETTER OFF.
Same with illegals. For them - the new system is better. For Union members is worse - but have faith - Obama and dems will find a way to create an exemption for them.
Union members WILL be BETTER OFF with tweaks that come from massive 'donations' to dem pols...
Who's left? The rest of us - and as our companies drop medical care to save money - it'll get worse. The middle class is totally screwed. In short - the people who don't back Obama... Not that he's acting like a Chicago thug or anything.
The middle class is WORSE OFF and it'll get worse with time.
Sorry, but that whole story sounds like BS... especially that part.
Absolutely. Since effectively almost no one has been able to sign up so far due to system glitches AND coverage doesn't begin until Jan 1, 2014.
It actually happened to a friend of mine. Maybe the state she lives in has temporarily cut off Medicaid due to lack of the fed. participation, I have no idea. All I know is what she told me and I’ve never had a reason to disbelieve her. Another person on the thread said all that about the ER having to treat people has changed in the last 5 days, so obviously others have heard it. *shrug* No idea, but like I said, she’s never lied to me that I’m aware of.
I don’t dispute the story you heard.
My wife works in a hospital. I ran your story past her and she said that is was absolutely incorrect.
Even in MA we have had Romney Care for a couple of years. Last week a guy came into the ER, got treated, was told he needed to purchase MassHealth (or whatever its called now) and he just looked at them and walked. Fully cared for, and the hospital had to eat it.
The ER treatment policy is part of a law passed back in RR days. It has not been changed or repealed at all. THAT would have been big news.
Thanks for that information Vermont and please thank your wife. I am now wondering if my friend’s daughter just wanted to sign up, couldn’t afford it and suckered mom.
