A certain shutdown narrative has become all-too-familiar: It is holding us back from gazing at the National Zoos pandas throughout the day and perusing the halls and walkways of our national museums and parks.
But for millions of the nations poor, the situation could soon be far more serious, and simply moving a gate or clicking on a link to another video wont solve their problems.
Though many of the programs that provide assistance to needy families and individuals like food stamps, Medicaid, and Medicare will continue running during the shutdown, the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is barely holding on.
The nearly $7 billion dollar program that provides access to food, formula, nutritional education, breast-feeding support, and health-care referrals to 9 million poor mothers, babies, and children is having to rely on $125 million in contingency funds from the USDA to continue operating throughout the month.
Douglas Greenaway, the president of the National WIC Association, a D.C. based nonprofit, calls the money a sneeze and warns that clinics will be forced to close their doors and end benefits if normal funding doesnt resume by the end of the month....

Why isn’t the girl’s husband providing for them?
Isn't that the way it was supposed to be? Don't pay diddley (or pay the fine) until you get sick and then enroll with preexisting?
Problem is you don't get care until you cough up the money. Gonna be a buncha PO-ed people when they get the flu this winter.
Bingo, that is the CORRECT answer!
In the middle of a divorce and they haven’t had their mediation yet to settle all that stuff.
WHAT?! She was FORCED to enroll in KenyaCare before being seen at an ER?
They called the ER because urgent care said the same thing & I know illegals get treated at ERs without insurance so I told my friend to take her to an ER. Evidently since illegals are allowed to sign up for Zerocare, they’ll get the same answer in the future, who knows?
I’d be pretty pi$$ed if I was poor and saw all these resources and effort being wasted in closing the ocean.

Thank goodness my wife has insurance through her company and I have the V.A., minimal though it is.
Thanks 2ndDivisionVet. Partisan Media Shills ping.

Haven’t the democraps won the war on poverty YET?
They’ve been waging this “War On Poverty” for 30 years!!!—The truth IS, the dems NEED the poor to STAY poor to USE as political pawns.
Too bad the poor don’t realize this.
If they did “realize” it, most wouldn’t care, I’m afraid. They just want to sit back, chillax and get stuff for free. One once told me “work is for mules and fools.”
Agreed! I carried our insurance and about a year before I was laid off I got worried because my company was laying off fairly regularly, maybe 3 people from our department every 4 - 6 months, but we had a small department of about 50.
So I made my husband get insurance from his job too and I’m glad I did because I was laid off almost a year to the day he picked up insurance. Too frightening being without.
I believe that WAS true - under the old evil medical care system where anyone could be treated free at an emergency room. I don't believe it's true anymore.

People should never allow themselves to become dependent on the taxpayers and the government for their survival. It’s a stupid move.
Move over poor people. Another week of this Obama shutdown and we’ll be poor too.
Can I have some of your cheese? How about your EBT card? Your Obamaphone? Your free tuition. Free gas. Not having to pay taxes.
Oh, I wanna be poor and Obama is going “to make it happen”, just as he promised.
Brother can you spare a dime?
Another “nonprofit” scam.
Think of the young mother with a sick child who doesn’t have someone who can bail her out by buying ObamaCare... We’re going to have deaths in the country because of ObamaCare - but the suck up press won’t cover it - - doesn’t help their team.
