King Canute commanded the tides to stop.
King Odinga promised the seas would stop rising.
One stopped wearing his crown.
The other will be President-For-Life.
Actually, King Canute was illustrating the limits of all temporal mortals. He is said to have remarked “Let all the world know that the power of kings is empty and worthless and there is no King worthy of the name save Him by whose will heaven and earth and sea obey eternal laws,” (Historia Anglorum, ed D E Greenway).
King Odinga, on the other hand, believes he is God Almighty and is limitless in his power. The two are as unalike as day and night.
