No kidding. Beach Boys, girl groups, cruising Main St., going to the drive-in...where the heck did fifty years go when we weren’t looking?

Oh, good grief! Are there no editors? The author probably spelled it "scene" and the "editor" said, "You idiot! Don't you know how to spell?"

“schizophrenics are the canary in the coal mine for us right now.”
That was a brilliant observation. The wisdom from some freepers shines through more and more. How can the death of that man or the young woman killed be funny for some of you. Many Americans have faced despair because of this presidents policies and politics. He IS the most divisive
president in history. Lincoln has nothing on him. It’s going to get much worst my friends.

For all of us old farts, Deja Vue! Thich Quang Duc had his little cookout in June, and President Diem and his brother Ngo Dinh Nhu were dead in the back of an APC by November.
Now, all we need is Moochie to start making snippy little comments about a Tea Party Barbeque, and four more fundamentalists to get clumsy with matches, and then we can ask if those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it...

Almost half a century ago, there were a few who committed acts of self-immolation in protest to the Vietnam War.
Does anyone have any idea as to the motivation of this particular person? Or did he have any motivation?

This link seems to have the most details, as well as some pictures of the guy on fire, though they are (thankfully) pixelated.
NY Daily News.
Multiple witnesses are saying there was a second man with a tripod and camera set up who seems to have been with the guy and filming him as he set himself on fire.
This is sounding more like it was intended to be some kind of political statement. I wonder if we'll ever know.

I'm sure drinking and drug use is up too. My gradeschool buddy installs breathilizers in cars for the State of West Virginia where the offenders generally have to have them put in via court order to keep their license. He just got the job and already has 100 installs to do. People who have a loose attachment to reality or have nothing to lose will snap.
It's like in the 1983 movie "Country" where during the Farm Crisis back then where Sam Shepard tried to comfort a friend losing his farm who was holding a cat and a rifle. Sam left his friend and saw the cat come around the corner after his friend committed suicide. I remember the farm crisis of the late 1970's and very early 1980's plus all the steel mills closing. IIRC, that was the time when you had various groups and people like Gordon Kahl dying in a shootout with the Feds as well.

And anyhow who’s laughing? Nobody I could see. Mentally ill people are under more pressure here. That’s a simple fact Jack. The heart rending tragedy of such people doesn’t make the topic off limits to such observations. And anyhow God never went on vacation. People do not go crazy beyond God’s control.
