12-year-old girl arrested for relentless bullying

A 12-year-old from Stamford, Conn., was arrested on Tuesday after police say she continually bullied, taunted and harassed another student while at school.

Police said the victim’s parents contacted the department to report the bullying on Sept. 20. Both students attend a private middle school.

The bullying intensified while police and school administrators investigated, pushing the victim to make suicidal comments, according to police.

Police said the pre-teen was charged with disorderly conduct and was released to the custody of her parents.

“This behavior will not be tolerated by Stamford Police Department,” said Capt. Richard Conklin and Lt. Diedrich Hohn, in a release.

“If it is brought to our attention we will vigorously investigate the allegations and make arrests when appropriate. We investigate all claims of bullying and this type of behavior will not be condoned in a learning environment.”

Since this was the private school, why didn't the school step in and expel the bully?

Good lesson here for all parents. If the school isn’t dealing with the problem, report it to the police.

That will get the school’s attention real fast.

Reflection of her parents? Not taking up for her but you have to wonder.

I agree, absentee parents.

I’ll tell you why the school didn’t stop the bully: we have the exact same situation at our private school. There is a mean but wealthy girl who has destroyed people with her bullying but no one will say or do anything because her parents contribute and she has several other siblings at the school. If they left mad, it would cost the school money. So the interests of the kids on scholarship or the kids whose parents stretch to pay the tuition are subjugated to the interests of this one wealthy family.

Right afterall the police arrested the 12 year old for that serious crime of disorderly conduct. Clearly the police could not find a crime this girl had committed, but that does not stop some at FreeRepublic from falling all over themselves for the Dims latest concoction of an issue.

ok, what should they have done then?

if the school was not handling it and having thier own kid respond with violence (leading to her being punished), *if* she is even able to respond/defend herself....

what is your solution here?

I don’t understand your post. I wasn’t attempting to define a solution at all. My point was simply that the girl’s disturbing behavior might be a reflection of life at home (i.e., maybe indicative of strife amongst family members or perhaps the kid is neglected). It shouldn’t be hard to figure out what’s driving her emotions.

‘Bout time.

Far too much of what’s called “bullying” is outright CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR—and should be treated as such.

10-1 the bully is of a protected class and the school is simply politically unwilling to challenge a “cultural norm” and there is limited parental influence at home.

Ah, yes...and the lesson to the kid being picked on is...be dependent on someone else to fight your battles.

Bullies understand only one thing, and that is getting their a** kicked. The parents of the kid being picked on should have given him/her some self defense training, and let him/her know that when the time came, to use that training to defend him/herself. Instead, the kid's cowardice has been reinforced, and the bully probably went home to a hot fudge sundae.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

That happened back at our church school, in Memphis. Same thing, I could have used those exact words to describe it. Son in 9th grade, relentless bullying by the rich family’s son, also in 9th. Toward the end of the year, whats-his-name threw mashed potatoes at my son, flipped them with a fork at him. J was sitting there, potatoes dripping off his glasses, his face, his shirt. He just reached over and picked this kid up and threw him.
J didn’t get to go on the class trip, was suspended...the brat got NOTHING.

AND the parents pay a ton of dough because THEY KNOW the kid is a brat, but that way she becomes the school’s problem to deal with during the day.

There is a simple, modern way to deal with bullies like this. It’s called a video camera. Record, publish, and expose. The general public has zero stomach for bullies and the retaliation would likely be severe both against the kid, the parents, and the school.

That works with boys and physical bullying, but girls are often bullied verbally.

You can’t use physical self defense on a verbal bully without getting tarred by the same brush.

Pubescent girls are already an emotional hormonal mess without being bullied. Sometimes adults have to step up and protect them.

Teaching them how to use the system to turn the tables on the bully is a form of self defense.

Bullies understand only one thing, and that is getting their a** kicked.

There is truth in that. But reality is often not like it is in the movies.

Little kid stands up to bully. A few punches are thrown. Bully backs down. Sure, that's one possible outcome. And it's the one we all hope for. But there are two other possible outcomes.

Possible outcome number two: Little kid stands up to bully, little kid takes a beating. Bullying continues as before.

Possible outcome number three: Little kid stands up to bully, bully's friends later jump the kid. Bullying continues as before.

As a former urban school teacher, I've seen many examples of outcomes two and three. In one case, I got to the scene just a minute too late. The bully broke a rib of the little kid who was trying to stand his ground.

I applaud police intervention in bullying cases.
