Exxon to Offer Benefits to Same-Sex Couples in US

Exxon Mobil Corp. said Friday that it will begin offering benefits to legally married same-sex couples in the U.S. for the first time starting next week.

The company says it will recognize "all legal marriages" when it determines eligibility for health care plans for the company's 77,000 employees and retirees in the U.S.

That means if a gay employee has been married in a state or country where gay marriage is legal, his or her spouse will be eligible for benefits with Exxon in the U.S. as of Oct. 1.

Exxon, which is facing a same-sex discrimination complaint in Illinois, said it was following the lead of the U.S. government. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, which had allowed states to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages granted in other states. In recent months, federal agencies have begun to offer benefits to legally-married same sex couples.

One of the last holdouts. A very conservative company and they just went belly up. They will even offer benefits to "married" couples in states that ban gay marriage. All thanks to the US Supreme Court and the fact that conservatives simply don't care.

I thought gays were supposed to be socially conscious. Why would they want to work for a “horrible, ecology wrecking” company like Exxon?

Any protest about this? Any activism within the companies? Or is it all over?

I just found out today that a ‘girl” that I work with
is unavailable for assignment later in the year
because “she” is going on “paternity” leave
because her “wife” is having a baby.

I have less than 2 years left before I retire
and it is all I can do to just bite my lip
and not say what I really think.

There are plenty of oil field jobs for those who will agree to Exxon’s social and political pathologies without argument.

Some groups and carriers are already covering “partners”. Under relationship they are referred to as “other” or “family”.

5/29/2013 – For the 14th straight year, ExxonMobil shareholders overwhelmingly rejected by 81% a proposition to incorporate into the company’s written non-discrimination policy language explicitly prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The ExxonMobil Board of Directors, in a proxy statement, recommended that shareholders vote against the proposal:

“The Board has reviewed in detail ExxonMobil’s existing global policies that prohibit all forms of discrimination, including those based on sexual orientation and gender identity, in any Company workplace, anywhere in the world. In fact, ExxonMobil’s policies go beyond the law and prohibit any form of discrimination. Based on these existing all-inclusive, zero-tolerance policies, the Board believes the proposal is unnecessary.”
