And the odds of 100% ability to cover up?

Well, considering that these kinds of "accidental shoot down" stories have been discussed since soon after the explosion, one might conclude that, perhaps, there was no successful cover-up.

...you hide the terrorist angle and you deny them their prize.

Terrorist angle doesn't quite wash for me. It seems to me that terrorists would have had at least one person, if not multiple people, filming the missile firing, the missile burn and especially the airliner explosion.
If terrorists had shot down TWA800, it just makes sense that they would have boasted about it and proved that they did it.

And, just the same as is claimed about navy ship personnel, terrorists could never have kept it a secret either, even if they had wanted to.

People claimed the very night of the explosion that soon after it happened, CNN aired a video of a missile trail approaching an airliner, then BOOM. They never aired it again. I clearly remember people claiming to have seen such a video.

I watched the video of burning debris in the water, emergency boats going to and fro, etc, but I didn’t see such a video.

However, that I personally didn’t see it is not conclusive that no missile trail video aired. I could have been away from my TV at that moment or watching another channel. The TV coverage went on for hours on every major channel. And immediately after the airing, the feds could have assumed control of the video and shut down any talk of such a thing ever happening.

A fair point. Especially the video evidence idea. Except... Remember this was 1996. Video devices were around but not nearly so ubiquitous and weren’t on phones. YouTube didn’t exist for another eight years. Terrorist vids of themselves weren’t all that common yet. All those witnesses on shore... and none of them got it on video either.

And it’s not so hard to ignore claims of responsibility. In any terror attack, or even plain accidents, there always seem to be dozens of different groups that all claim responsibility. Same with 800. Lots of groups claimed it.

If you repeat a lie many times, people are bound to start believing it.

I didn’t have cable. We were watching local NYC news broadcasts. I don’t know if the video ever aired on cable.

“I’ve never been a fan of the low-voltage spark exploding the center fuel tank theory... It’s hard to believe. But I’m not buying this either.

a.) It’s WND. One big problem right there. Note the lack of any actual new evidence. Just the same warmed-over opinions.

b.) There is just no way— no way— that a whole navy ship full of hundreds of sailors could keep a secret this juicy for this long. Ain’t happening.

I’d still believe it was a surface launched missile, but from a terrorist boat somewhere, not the navy. Much easier to keep a secret within a smaller group of FBI and Boeing investigators. Also a good way to get the CIA of all people to make you a sweet graphic movie. The motive is even a little bit noble... If you hide the terrorist angle and you deny them their prize.”

If terrorists were bobbing on the water firing anti-radiation missles (CIA states the nosecone blew off), the US Navy would have picked up their launch. Would they have investigated the launch site?... or too busy picking up the pieces?

Yes, film taping in 1996 was a bit less common than a few years later and the devices were bulky compared to digital cameras of today. However, anyone capable of acquiring a sophisticated missile could also get a battery powered camera and become proficient in using it.

Hehe, though it could have been like in the movie “True Lies” where the lead terrorist was being filmed as he bragged about the nukes they had stolen. The battery died and he barked at the filming terrorist to “Get another one, you moron!”

The video that my adult son and I saw was from someone taping a party. Open patio doors were in the background and the shot was of someone by the doors or in the doorway. You could clearly see a missile rising from somewhere behind them. They weren’t taping the missile, it simply appeared in the background. If I remember correctly the party was on LI.

I believe that a missile was fired from a ship, but that the ship was from another country collaborating in our training exercise.

It could have been a multi-sensor missile that combined IR and active radar.

The missile was supposed to lock on another plane (USA military), but not be fired. The other country’s ship either made a big error or it was fired by a crazy weapons officer.

I have no proof of any of the above.

a.) It’s WND. One big problem right there.

One has to remember what WND was at the time of the TWA 800 disaster.

1) Back then, WND was the first of the "alternative media" to fight the White House Press Corps credentialing process. Clinton tried to block WND from attending White House daily press briefings, because of the questions they would ask. WND fought the battles in the courts and eventually won, beginning the redefinition of what were considered to be legitimate on-line news organizations.

2) WND's top investigative reporter at the time was Paul Sperry. Sperry ran several breaking series' in advance of the 2000 election, including the White House "lost" emails and backup archives that Al Gore was in charge of, the downgrading of the West Wing telephone PBX switch system that preventing tracing calls to specific telephones, and although scrubbed from the internet, I believe that it was Paul Sperry whom Bill Clinton banned from the White House after Sperry confronted Clinton during a White House Easter Egg Hunt photo-op for children.

3) WND ran the series "Tennessee Underworld" in September 2000, exposing Al Gore's connections to Tennessee racketeering. This expose was considered to be largely responsible for Al Gore losing the electoral votes in his home state, making Florida ground-zero for Gore's court fights.

On the other side of the ledger, WND sent aggressive reporter Les Kinsolving to many press briefings, where Kinsolving would ask the questions that nobody else would dare to ask. Kinsolving became a lightning rod for others to attack WND as a less-than-serious "news" outfit.

As I sent that off I realized it was probably going to sound as if I were taking you to task, but it was more my thoughts about his efforts and not something I meant to be taking you to task for.

I’m so tired of these people trying to spin things.

Sorry for the mis-impression I conveyed.

I’ve always believe it was an accidental launch by the Navy.

Three missiles launched accidentally? Really?
