A 747’s engines are right there next to the fuselage. Missiles are not terribly accurate at those speeds and it will rarely hit the engine directly. Not to mention, do you know if the missile guidance system is programmed to find center mass between those 4 hot spots and not just strike a single hot spot? (Hint: I know they are.)
Seems plausible. Always makes me think about the UFO incident at Malmstrom AFB on 3/16/1967 when reported sightings of UFOs co-incided with several Minuteman missiles going off-line.

do you know if the missile guidance system is programmed is it selectable on all stinger/sidewinder systems? or is it standard? who selects the option or does the missile select which mode it will use? what if there's only one engine?
If it was a terrorist attack then it wouldn’t matter how much the government denied. The group responsible would yell it from the roof tops.
Another thing is that we shouldn’t assume that if it was an accidental shoot down by our military that every sailor aboard would know about it.

I've served on board ships. Yes... They would all know. You can't fire ~anything~ without everybody knowing. You can't fire a .50 cal off the bridge wing without everybody knowing about it.

Also zero chance of an accidental shoot-down by the Navy. Navy SAMs are radar guided. While it is conceivable (barely) that errors on board might accidentally launch, there is no way they would accidentally keep the track engaged through the entire missile flight. No engagement, no guidance, no intercept.
What if it wasn't an accident?

if i remember correctly they found missile fuel in the cushions of the seats on twa 800. There was no way that specific chemical could be in those seats. It was not in the manufacturing process of the seats.
