That's the provocative thesis of Jeffrey Lord, writing at The American Spectator. He's the one we've been waiting for, to borrow an expression. Here is some of the case Lord makes:
...terrified Republicans have turned on Ted Cruz like they once went after... Ronald Reagan.
Yes, Ronald Reagan.
While no Republican Senator will ever breathe anything but the highest of laudatory tributes to Reagan these days, in fact once upon a time Reagan himself was treated in exactly the same way that Senator Cruz (not to mention Governor Palin) is treated today.
Why? For doing exactly what Senator Cruz is doing today.
Bluntly calling out the problems of the day and taking direct action to do something about them. This is a far cry from the Washington politics of going-along-to-get-along or as Reagan pointedly described it, the GOP Establishment's politics of the "fraternal order."
Senator Cruz, to the visible fury of the Inside-the-Beltway, it's-all-about-the- tactics crowd, refuses to play The Washington Game. Cruz and his Utah colleague Mike Lee, along with others like Rand Paul, have no intention of mouthing words and slogans like "I voted to repeal Obamacare" all the while knowing the vote was meaningless mush and would do not a thing to damage the most unpopular government program since the Vietnam-era draft.
Instead, Cruz - in his multiple media appearances and through the Don't Fund Obamacare website - is leading a move that would actually do something. To move the needle - and make the stakes for Obamacare supporters have a political cost.
Doing, in other words, exactly the kind of thing Ronald Reagan did when he arrived on the nation's political stage. The kind of thing that caused the Ford/Bush wing of the GOP to go after Reagan repeatedly as some sort of extremist nut.

You’ll know if the MSM now puts on the full-court press to absolutely destroy him. They developed an Immune Response System after the first Reagan somehow got by them.
Funny thing is, this didn’t happen until the GOPe decided to make war with him. The hatred of McConnell and McQueeg created the wind at Ted Cruz’s back. They mean to stab him there, yet it just makes him stronger.
And I agree with the author’s premise: They treated Ronald Reagan the same way. I remember it well.
OK, since this has been decided, who is going to be the next Billy Graham???
Let’s pray Cruz and other emerging conservatives will be the face of the new GOP and RINOs become extinct.
Coming in as he did on the heels of Jimmy Carter, the MSM complex didn’t give Reagan too much grief over his faith. That would have been to tar Jimmy as well. Now we have one of those “EEEEK” Christians as opposed to the True Keeper Of The Socialist Faith. It’ll be interesting. God still wins and so will God’s people if they stick to Him, but oh the sulphuric emanations that will be encountered on the way.
His son maybe?
Careful now. There are some here who can't stand Cruz and they didn't like Reagan. Both are/were liberals, dontcha know.
Remains to be seen. IMO, America needs a spiritual and political revival of epic proportions if we are to survive.
No. I like Ted immensely, but Reagan had something Ted doesn’t (yet) possess: lots of executive experience.
Our nominee in 2016 needs to come from the ranks of our governors.
Reagan used the media in spite of their attempts to interpret and editorialize against him. They will not allow that to happen a second time.
Agree - remains to be seen. But so far, IMO, Cruz looks like one of the best U.S. leaders since the late 1700’s. I would love to be on his staff.
It seems to me Ted Cruz should just be Ted Cruz. He’s doing a good enough job doing that, and should keep it up.
Ask the question in 2024 or 2028. It took Reagan 14 years and at least one failed run for the presidency between getting elected to statewide office and becoming president.
