Since February, CVS Caremark has been pushing its pharmacists to enroll customers in a prescription-drug rewards program.
The benefit to customers is the opportunity to earn up to $50 a year in store credits that can be used to buy shampoo, toothpaste or other products.
The benefit to CVS is persuading pharmacy customers, through questionable means, to give up federal privacy safeguards for their medical information and permitting the company to share people's drug purchases with others.
"It's very troubling," said Paul Stephens, director of policy and advocacy for the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse in San Diego.
"Your medical information is very sensitive," he said. "Pharmaceutical companies obviously would want to know what you're taking and get you to buy more expensive medicines."
Walgreens and Rite-Aid have their own rewards programs for prescription drugs. But officials at each company said they don't require customers to relinquish federal privacy protections.

My employer has a similar program. I do not participate in it.
And yet they make you wait away from the counter so you don’t hear the business of the customer they are waiting on.
Well this should kick up a shindy with their customers (who have a clue). Never a fan of CVS Caremark as a (former) customer, and their employees are not very well treated by management, so I’ve been told.
I set one up at CVS for my dog’s scripts. Same at Walgreens.
I suspect that soon, CVS is going to have a major correction.
It is built on the remains of a dozen drug store chains, and has that “explosive growth” attitude of an overheated corporation. I also notice that its prices are often higher than its substantial competitors.
Just seems to be a recipe for getting humbled.
CVS SUX.
So does Walgreens online prescriptions. Total incompetence on parade.
Thanks for posting this! Was going to change a prescription to CVS........but, not now.
There once was something called personal space.
Someone one told me that Soros has a financial interest in CVS. Sure would like to know whether it is true or not.
does anybody still think that ANY of records are private?.....the govt knows all and the govt sells all too...
Just set up an online account with Social Security Admini8stration. Received an email from SSA stating my personal data was verified by Experian. Any more questions about privacy?
"How did you get my social security number to verify anything?" used to be my comeback.
Yeah, unless you are totally deaf and blind that is...
