In 1959, I had no idea that islam is so evil, and I would never have condemned an entire religious group. I have since learned that some of the prejudices I saw that time were accurate observations of the cultural norms of certain groups of people.
Just so you all know that there can, sometimes, be another ending to this story my best friend is a Syrian Moslem who married an American woman he met while he was doing his residency in Iowa (he’s a doctor). She converted but only wears a scarf when she goes to mosque, otherwise dresses and acts like any American redhead. They own a lovely home in Michigan and she runs their farm (more a hobby than a business). They have three beautiful children. Before the civil war they visited family in Syria several times and she was never prevented from coming back to the States. So not every story is a horror story.
“I am her captive, her prisoner; she, my jailer, might treat me more decently if I find ways to please her. This is difficult for me to write about but I did it. I repeat the words: “There is one God, Allah, and Mohammed was his prophet.”
I am now a Muslim at least in my mother-in-law’s eyes but that still isn’t enough for her. When she is angry at me, she spits at me. She calls me “Yahud” or “Jew.” When I complain to my husband, he dismisses me as being dramatic.”
Ah ha. She is not only an adulteress, but an apostate from our wonderful religion of piece. Call the Imam and tell him to issue a fatwa calling for her head.
They were asking for a little respect for somebody who got into the kind of situation that some people then or now do get into and asking that people listen to her story and not attack her in a knee-jerk fashion -- not running down a whole generation.
So many people respond to just about anything by calling the person who tells a personal tale of woe an idiot. It doesn't take much brains to slap on labels like that either.
FWIW, Obama's mom, a 50s girl, apparently got married to a guy who already had a wife. Things like that did and do happen to people in every generation, and Chesler is telling her story (one more time) in the hope that fewer women will go through the same experience.
Obama’s mom and her family were nuts
Outliers and then some
How many white cornfed girls in 1960 at barely 18 would find themselves knocked up by a black African man already married
And abandoned by him runs off with a Muslim oriental man to the third world dragging Barry along only to dump him later in Hawaii with her red diaper parents
These folks were kooks insofar as white middle Americans go....man just look at the company they kept....but like all of it the media ignores
And just look what fun it has brought us all
By comparison this naive Jewish woman seems sane
Pity Ann Dunham couldn’t have just been happy singing folks songs in some coffee shop in Honolulu
Obama acts like he is totally unaware of his inner racial conflict but methinks it defines him
As it does so many push come to shove....
Anyhow I sure always knew Islam was primitive and dangerous....and I’m a 60s kid
Just about any girl that things like this happen to is an "outlier." That has more to do with psychology than with race or diet or other factors.
If Chesler has a message it's directed at those women "outliers" who might stumble into something like this, and if you really are a "60s kid" you might consider girls who were psychological "outliers" ("daddy issues," etc.) do get into troubles not entirely different, whatever their background and whatever the era.
As I understood it the people who said all this happened fifty years ago weren't running down that generation or saying that women didn't experience these things nowadays. It looked to me more like they were just trying to get around the people who'd just pronounce Chesler an idiot and the thread as worthless.
I’ll point out it took her 50 years to tell her story, and in the intervening years she was part of a movement that has done much damage to the institution of marriage here in the U.S.
Said movement still rarely speaks out against the treatment of women in Islamic countries.
Some harshness is more than justifiable.
