Yes, Caracas has tremendous poverty due to a failing socialistic state. Socialist fail to learn from the failures of other systems that big government is a system doomed to fail.
What is drawing the poor to crime is the illegal drug industry. The poor will rob, steal, and kidnap to further this industry with the necessary “operating capital.” You will see this statement in the above report: “Much of Caracas’s crime and violence can be attributed to mobile street gangs and organized crime groups.” These gang groups are working the illegal drug industry. Venezuela is the leading drug hub of South America.
Legalization would affect the supply side of the curve. It would saturate the market and the profit would drop out. You are correct. It would increase the users and the costs due to the mental side effects would be costly. As people find out the realities of these costs, the demand should go down as knowledge increases. We will know soon enough what happens when Washington State and Colorado will soon allow pot sales.
I have been thinking that a way to destroy the illegal drug culture is to sabotage the consumer market and thus, the demand side of the curve. How do you do that? By flooding the market with consumers who are not drug addicts but people involved in sting operations. When the pusher is not certain if his customer will set in motion his arrest, the risk selling the product will be so high it will crash the system. I think today’s high tech advances could facilitate such a program.

When I was growing up it was common practice to send people with mental problems to asylums for treatment. I think it was stopped during a Dem President’s admin., which led to the prevailing “homeless on the street” population we now have to deal with on a daily basis. ....Many cities are running the ‘homeless’ out of the business and tourist districts. .....At the same time, MANY of the SANE just claim to be ‘homeless’, etc., and take home hundreds of $$ every day from begging in prime areas. Don’t feed the beggars by giving them money.
The author interestingly omits the 100+ million innocent people slaughted by communist and fascist dictatorial regimes in Europe alone since the beginning of the 20th Century. The fact those regimes first confiscated privately owned weapons is a rather inconvenient truth to those who advocate what they’d like us to believe are “reasonable” restrictions.

Does this Howard Schultz guy think that “suggesting” people don’t bring guns to Starbucks is going to change anything? For one thing, if some criminal type wanted to rob a Starbucks, do you think this would stop him? And does he think that law-abiding gun-owning citizens that legally carry a gun into his Starbucks are the problem? Making Starbucks a “suggested” gun-free zone is not only stupid in it’s ignorance, but gives the armed robbers another target where folks can’t shoot back.

The invasion of the effete will never happen. Many Euros have an abnormal, irrational hatred of all firearms. Especially Brits. I doubt the homicide rate was much higher before Britain passed severe restrictions on all gun-owners, but their petty crime rate sure has risen dramatically. My wife and I just returned from a vacation out west with one of her Brit sisters and bros-in-law. The b-in-law was astonished that national park rangers carried firearms. I had to explain to him about dangerous animals (and sometimes humans) out west. They’re of the opinion that if we, humans, could simply get rid of all guns, nobody would kill anybody else.
