A top Russian official on Saturday warned Ukraine against signing a landmark trade and cooperation agreement with the European Union, saying Moscow would retaliate with trade restrictions that could push this ex-Soviet republic toward default. …

Russia is opposing Kiev’s plans to sign a free-trade and political association agreement with the 28-member bloc in November, seeking instead to lure Kiev into a Moscow-led economic union. …

If the USA was strong, it would have put both of these nascent empires down and allowed the Ukraine to be truly independent. But instead, the USA has Obama, the servant of these powers.

Russia has regarded the Ukraine as a semi-autonomous area of Russia for centuries. The more things change in Russia, the more they stay the same.

During Cold War times, that would never have happened. Nowadays, the USA is so weak that anything is possible.

Somehow I just can’t consider “retaliation” a “lure”.

I would have to say that in a strange way, it would be better for Ukraine to stay out of entanglements with the EUSSR. Look at what they did to Greece and Cyprus.

Ukrainians be warned. They want your bank accounts.

The corruption in the Ukraine is so great there is no way of knowing why they are willing to sign this deal, one thing is almost certain, the decision to sign or not to sign the deal has nothing to do with the national interest.

EU intelligence services, and corporations will grease palms, either at a rate equal to or above the rate Moscow is greasing palms,...

This kind of thing will persist until the forensics guys are scraping what's left of Putin off what's left of the ceiling of what's left of his limo.

Cuba’s dictator burned the bridges, culminating in his speech in the mid-60s in which he proclaimed, “I am a Marxist-Leninist, and will be a Marxist-Leninist until the day I die!” Meanwhile rich drunken Americans have had to avail themselves of other sex tourism options.

That’s nonsense. Mexico isn’t part of the US, and wasn’t in the past, and I’m pretty sure no one wants Mexico annexed into the US. Russia wants to reconquer Ukraine, but knows it can’t do it through military means.

I’m sure no one in Russia wants any part of the older Soviet Union, let alone a greater East Bloc to be incorporated into a single nation-state entity.
It is a common knowledge that feeding all the Stans and to some degree about half of the rest of the world has contributed to Soviet bankruptcy greatly.
Dismantling a Com bloc and Soviet Union was a way to get rid of toxic assets.
It worked really well for them, isn’t it? Russia is now at the lower end of a first world in terms of economy for the first time in history.
