Senator Collins says Proposed Food Stamps Cut Too Deep

Senator Susan Collins say a proposal in Congress to slash food stamps funding would hurt Mainers who need it most.

House lawmakers passed a bill Thursday that would make around $4 billion dollars in cuts each year to the almost $80 billion dollar-a-year food stamp program.

Maine is among the top five states with the biggest share of people on food stamps at 18-percent.

Collins says the program needs to be reformed but the proposed cuts are too deep.

“We have a lot of elderly people living in rural Maine who really depend on food stamps in order to get proper nutrition. We also have a lot of children living in poor families that are also dependent on food stamps. ”

Collins predicts the Senate will reject the cuts to the food stamp program.

Let’s put a picture and address on the SNAP and EBT cards.

Gee, that's awful Susan. Guess your efforts to get everyone employed have fallen flat, huh?

Just think: if we didn't have 8 to 10 million illegals on food stamps (conservative estimate), you might have enough cash left over to take care of Americans stuck in poverty.

Whatta concept, huh?!

Of course they will
The House more closely responds to the people.
The Senate more closely respond to the Government.

Hey Susan - it is NOT too deep until it goes into negative territory. Half of working able America is sleeping in the Gubmint hammock.

Well then I suggest the rest of that state of loons get together and take up a collection to make up the difference if you care about them as much as you like to pretend.

This is all Kabuki Theater. The House proposes the cuts, the Senate will strip them out, and the compromise package will fund EBT cards, so strip club- and liquor store-owners need not worry. All is well.

This like other problems would be solved by a robust economy. The biggest obstacle to prosperity is not economic forces but the paralyzing ideology of the White House.

We have a lot of elderly people living in rural Maine who really depend on food stamps in order to get proper nutrition.

Well in that case you won't mind if the government then limits food stamps to foods that are nutritionally proper. That way Michelle can strong arm people on the dole into eating broccoli and leave the rest of us alone.

I've got a thought. Why doesn't Senator Collins support laws that would bring manufacturing and the fishing industry back to Maine? Since she wants to criticize something, how about criticizing LL Bean (huge Maine retailer) which only sells a handful of its merchandise made in the USA?

That should solve Maine's food stamp problem. It's called earning your keep. We should make a list of RINOs who are as disgusting as McCain.

“Senator Susan Collins say a proposal in Congress to slash food stamps funding would hurt Mainers who need it most. “

Those who need it the least would still get food stamps? What exactly is this doorknob saying?

Laz, I love you dearly, but you (and other FReepers) need to stop pushing that myth. Yes, strip clubs and liquor stores can accept SOME EBT cards, but not all. When what is now called Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) was issued via a paper welfare check those same purchases were being made once those checks were cashed. Now they can be tracked electronically, but TANF is not the same as food stamps - which are also issued on the same Ebt cards.

Maine has always had a reputation (in MY mind anyway) of being fiercely independent (Y'cain't get theah from heah) so I ask myself ... what kind of people are in Maine anyway ?

Outside of a city or two or three ... what's the population demographic?

Elderly people have SS and I would wonder ... how many live in homes or on property already paid for .. no mortgage ?

If the argument is; "Welll .. they gott'a pay their taxes "... then the taxes are too much .... period.

I'm retired with less than a thou SS, my house paid for on 3 acres and all I have is electric, internet/phone bundle, food, car expenses and taxes.

I don't like the taxes, but I've learned how to pay 'em.

I cut firewood and burn fuel oil.

Bottom line ... I live ... not extravagantly, but I'm overweight (I eat well), I'm warm in the winter, can drive to the store and church and we go out to China Buffet twice a month (sometimes MORE !)

What's this poverty thing anyway ... especially among elderly in a state that has more land than Carter's got Little Liver pills ?
