University of Kansas journalism professor David Guth has been placed on administrative leave following a tweet he made on Monday about the shooting at the Washington Navy Yard in reference to the National Rifle Association.
Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little announced the decision on Friday.
"In order to prevent disruptions to the learning environment for students, the School of Journalism and the university, I have directed Provost Jeffrey Vitter to place Associate Professor Guth on indefinite administrative leave pending a review of the entire situation. Professor Guths classes will be taught by other faculty members," Gray-Little said in a statement.
After the Navy Yard shootings Monday, David Guth tweeted out "#NavyYardShooting The blood is on the hands of the #NRA. Next time, let it be YOUR sons and daughters. Shame on you. May God damn you."
The Kansas State Rifle Association is condemning the tweet and calling for Guth to be fired. President Patricia Stoneking said in a statement, "The KSRA will do everything possible to see to the removal of this man. He should be fired immediately. His statements are outrageous!"
"Its one thing to engage in thoughtful dialogue and speak against something but it is quite another to incite violence," she added.
Asked by campusreform.com if he was sorry, Guth said he wouldn't take it back "one bit." KMBZ has reached out to Guth, but so far we have not heard back.
The University also decried Guth's statements on Thursday.
"While the First Amendment allows anyone to express an opinion, that privilege is not absolute and must be balanced with the rights of others. Thats vital to civil discourse," said Ann Brill, dean of the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications said also in a written statement.
"Professor Guths views do not represent our school and we do not advocate violence directed against any group or individuals."
pingy!
Let me guess: An indefinite paid sabbatical for the good professor.
Poor guy.
The jackass has tenure. This is about all they can do to him.
Gee, aren’t the Bushes NRA members? So that means, his tweets are FELONIES.
I laughed yesterday when he doubled down on his tweet knowing full well that I would be reading about his dismissal today.
Guth reacts by saying “Oh no! Not another tax payer paid vacation! Spain, Rome, Prague...? So many choices!”
That’s a “red flag” for sure. Let’s put him on the Domestic Terrorism watch list and NICS as well.
He should be stopped and checked at all transportation terminals, especially out-of-country flights.
He appears to be gunning for a job with the current administration.
Double-secret probation.
Yup! “administrative leave” = paid vacation.
Per info in another thread, Guth is an associate professor - not yet tenured.
Exactly - this is a resume enhancer for a job with any democrap.
Never commit TWS; Tweeting While Stoned.
The blood is actually on Slick Willie Clinton’s hands.
Not sure what the faculty rules are there, but I hope you’re right.
Why would any university hire someone so ignorant of the responsibilities of citizens, and the actual role of an organization such as the NRA?
I am appalled at the depth and breath of ignorance of this university teacher.
Does he really think that guns can be eliminated from this Earth, if not, it is the fault of the NRA? Where is his common sense? He and his ilk need to be purged from our educational system. He is incapable of connecting the dots; he appears to be one of those low information voters.
