That was poorly stated, or poorly quoted. I think that Carr does not believe in mandatory union membership, but believes that right is up to the individual. The UAW would love to create a closed-shop union at VW, though I don’t know how they can do that in a “right to work” state like Tennessee.

The UAW/VW discussion is going on right now in Chattanooga, which is why it entered the article.

I’ve already donated modestly to Carr’s campaign.

I figured as much, only a poorly schooled reporter would use a double negative. Sad to see how badly standards have fallen. Public education sucks.
