'Ginger gene' developed after humans moved to colder climate 50,000 years ago

Fair skin and red hair first appeared around the time people settled in Europe and still remains a dominant gene in southern Europeans today, even if they become tanned. Known as V6OL allele, the gene made skin lighter as humans were getting less vitamin D from no longer being in the harsh African sun , the study reported. However it brought with it health risks as it is commonly associated with melanoma - a serious form of skin cancer. Researchers made the discovery while examining the evolutionary processes of particular genes of 1,000 people from Spain. Study author Dr Saioa Lopez said: "As a consequence of depigmentation there has been a collateral damage consequence to health.

Now, I know that most prefer Mary Ann over Ginger, but that doesn’t mean a few Ginger genes are a bad thing.

I Just read that fair skin and red hair was a Neanderthal trait. That would explain its presence in northern European climes.

So all African Americans are going to go fair skin with red or blond hair getting the ginger gene because of our temperate American climate? Poor Michael Jackson was born too soon.

Not until natural selection comes back. Blacks in the US used to have very high rates of rickets until Vit. D was added to milk. It’s still a problem among lactose-intolerant and/or breast-fed northern Blacks.
