A Pennsylvania high school student has been suspended for what his attorney calls “doing the right thing”—handing in a pocket knife that he accidentally brought to a football game. …

(David) Schaffner (III, 16,) was asked to leave the game and on Monday was handed a 10-day out-of-school suspension by the Fox Chapel Area school district. The district’s parent-student handbook says students who bring weapons to school or school-related events—including knives and firearms—can be expelled for a year, Triblive.com reports. …

Friggin’ ridiculous - in that part of PA, every boy probably has a pocket knife in their pocket at some point during the day. For him to be suspended because he turned it in is to turn common sense on it’s head.

School is back in session, so we have lots of new zero tolerance stupidity stories to look forward too.

There should be an award handed out every June for the stupidest zero tolerance enforcement of the previous school year.

Lesson Learned: NEVER do “the right thing” with liberals... they will only hold it against you.

This is the result of government workers having to follow rules that ensure they are not trusted with common sense management decisions. When employees think for themselves, they add risk and liability to the government.

Hmm...

Clear firing lanes around his tree stand the week before archery season opens.

Check.

Engineer "vacation" from school for the first week and a half of archery season.

Check.

This kid is brilliant.

Wish I could have thought of something like that.

'Course when I was in high school everyone carried a pocket knife. Heck, we'd take shotguns and rifles to shop class to work on them.

I have a nephew (straight A student) that was suspended for bringing a pocket knife to school. He got suspended as well, but I don’t think it was for 10 days. Usually, they want to send you off to some kind of alternative campus where they put all the misfits that the teachers can’t handle and are always getting into trouble.

Might be Western PA, but it’s also FOX CHAPEL - rich white enclave in Allegheny Co. Not many blue collar pocket-knife folks can afford to live there anymore.

Sounds like turning it in and playing by “the rules” is what got him the suspension. If he’d kept his mouth shut, this would have been a non-starter.

The liberals are winning the battle over our kiddies’ minds in the public schools, sadly.

The reason for all "zero tolerance" policies in a nutshell. Thanks, T-1.

Others may differ, but I see this as a positive seminal event in the life of this boy and his friends.

Learning early in life of the moral cowardice and intellectual bankruptcy of the public school system is a wonderful asset that will help protect this lad and others from the greater lies and injustices that await them in the future.

Sometimes good sense can mean accepting God’s grace rather than sacrificing yourself to pointless rules that urge you to badly torpedo what is good over a human regulation. The student could have simply left and gone home with the item, or while there discreetly put it somewhere that it posed minimal risk of getting used for anything bad. (Maybe into a coach’s area, without saying anything, or later sending an anonymous note explaining what happened.) And been more careful next time.

Grew up in that neck of the woods. In my time, many grade school kids carried pocket knives to school. Used for whittling, mumbly peg or knife baseball. Never used as weapons.

I the early 80’s, I routinely parked my Ford Courier in my high school parking lot, A 12ga shotgun behind the seat. Every chance we got, my friends and I would go deer hunting after school. In South Carolina, the season was early and long. We had great respect for firearms, most of us being “Marine Brats”. It never occurred to us to do anything violent at school.

Boy, how times have changed. Not for the good.

A general sense of the grace of God, frequently manifesting as the uncommon thing people like to call common sense, is gone. Only gospel as a radically private message (consider it the underground opposition) can combat this. The “state as arm of church” paradigm is fading fast.
