WASHINGTON, Sept 17 (Reuters) - The White House budget office directed federal agencies on Tuesday to prepare for the possibility of a federal government shutdown should Democrats and Republicans fail to find a budget compromise by the end of September.
With conservative Republicans pushing for spending cuts and attempting to cut off funding for President Barack Obama's 2011 healthcare law, the two sides are having trouble reaching a budget agreement ahead of the Sept. 30 end of the 2013 fiscal year.
White House budget director Sylvia Mathews Burwell told federal agencies in a memo to update their plans for keeping a skeleton staff on duty for essential government services.

That's the way it should be. Always.
I can’t imagine any impact.
Kind of like when the SIEU went on strike and we nurses could work in peace without sabotage and accusations of bigotry.
It was very nice.
Then they came back, though, with their vast and intricate knowledge of everything written in their contracts.
When Newt shut it down there was no impact and he looked like someone in charge. Imagine the republican house leader in charge of the opposition. It’s where the affection, probably the only affection, of Newt comes from, as far as I know.
skeletons vote Dem they might as well run the government to boot.
Our side better darn well (with Cruz doing it) show the American stupid, gullible public what shutdown really means...checks still go out, and all lies told by 0bama (remember the ongoing Sequestration cuts and shut downs?), etc.
If our side - the Stupid Party - can’t show the truth...oh golly, well, just had a football Charlie Brown - Lucy flashback. Ugh.
“...plans for keeping a skeleton staff ...”
It’s just so hard to envision a “skeleton staff” thinking about the thousands of “obese” executive level and GS-11s and up .... ?
But they should do nothing until Obamacare is killed. That isn't money it's about lives. Death panels and refusal to pay for prescriptions that keep older Americans alive. It's about Doctors leaving the profession or becoming Concierge Doctors and not accepting Government funds. It's about hospitals closing down and it's about me paying for abortions.
Kill Obamacare at all costs, NOW.
Shut the government down.
Except that the make believe money has to be paid as debt with interest to the privately held Federal Reserve. Can't figure out why....they didn't provide it.
Air Traffic Control, all uniformed DoD and only DoD civilians deemed essential, Food Safety and Inspection, Protection of Life and Property (meaning some cops and agents), Border Patrol, and anything to do with vital infrastructure (hazardous waste, power, etc).
Oh......and a staff at the Social Security Office to ensure the checks go out.
I am not kidding about the last one.
Except that the make believe money has to be paid as debt with interest to the privately held Federal Reserve. Can’t figure out why....they didn’t provide it.
Sure they did-—they print it.
Well actually they do not print it, but they tell the Department of Printing and engraving how much to print, so in reality they do print it.
Then they buy Bonds with it, and they print those too.
Look out, the nation’s seniors will soon be eating dog food!
Shut it down with no retroactive pay!!!
Eliminate all unnecessary and/or unconstitutional agencies and fire everyone wirking for them!
leftists are running internet ads to that effect
GridEx II is coming up.
WASHINGTON The electric grid, as government and private experts describe it, is the glass jaw of American industry. If an adversary lands a knockout blow, they fear, it could black out vast areas of the continent for weeks; interrupt supplies of water, gasoline, diesel fuel and fresh food; shut down communications; and create disruptions of a scale that was only hinted at by Hurricane Sandy and the attacks of Sept. 11.
This is why thousands of utility workers, business executives, National Guard officers, F.B.I. antiterrorism experts and officials from government agencies in the United States, Canada and Mexico are preparing for an emergency drill in November that will simulate physical attacks and cyberattacks that could take down large sections of the power grid.
Shut it down!
