President Obama took a swipe at the Hard Right on Monday, accusing tea-party-aligned House Republicans of gambling with the nation's economy by threatening to shut down the government unless Obamacare is defunded.
In a sprawling economic speech, Obama called on Congress to avert a government shutdown by passing a budget, and he insisted he would brook no wrangling over a raise in the debt ceiling. Obama said such a shutdown, or even the possibility of default, would damage the still-fragile economic recovery.
Specifically, the president went after Republicans who say they won't vote for any budget deal that does not nullify the Affordable Care Act. "I cannot remember a time when one faction of one party promises economic chaos if it can't get 100 percent of what it wants," Obama said. "That's never happened before, and that's what happening right now."
Obama appealed to the rest of the Republican Party for help in brokering a budget compromise, challenging members to break with those calling for defunding Obamacare.
"Are some of these folks so beholden to one extreme wing of their party that they're willing to tank our whole economy?" he said. "Are they willing to hurt people?"
I think if enough people change their voter registration, it might shake up people in both parties.
Dear FRiend Potatochop,
First, I think of myself as a member of the Tea Party (”Taxed Enough Already”) patriots.
Second, I want to repeal ALL of Obamacare, as do a majority of Americans. That repeal would have happened ALREADY if Romney had been elected with coattails that also produced a Senate with a Republican majority. But it didn’t.
Third, I think that a majority of Americans does NOT want to shut down our government for a day, week, month, or however long it takes for Obama to beat our elected Representatives into submission to “the will of the majority” — you know, the same majority that does NOT want to shut down our government at all.
Fourth, a government shutdown will be much more painful than a 5PM whistle. As the “sequester” showed, our Chief Executive is determined to create AS MUCH PAIN AS POSSIBLE, isn’t he?
And even before that deliberately maximized pain is applied, most American citizens do NOT want a government shutdown:
(a) People who need their Social Security checks don’t. (b) Soldiers in Afghanistan whose families struggle to live within their military paychecks don’t.
(c) Veterans receiving medical care, don’t.
(d) Retirees living on interest from government bonds, don’t.
(e) Doctors and nurses who would not be paid, if government medical “reimbursements” stop, don’t.
(f) College students, tornado victimes, weather-persons?, judges, prison guards, border patrol, you-name-it, DON”T.
Fifth, isn’t this the same White House that said, “Never let a crisis go to waste!”? And doesn’t this White House NEED a crisis NOW to divert Americans from linking the worst presidency ever to corrupt Democrat candidates BEFORE the 2014 elections. BEFORE Democrats and Independents decide to vote Republican?
IMHO, the 2014 campaign has already started. Our media are already helping Obama spin the “rope” in his plan to “rope-a-dope” us Republicans. Obama knows that he can put the blame for causing a government shutdown on our “Tea Party” — if we just give him the chance.
Obama wants to make the 2014 election a referendum on “no-government-shut-downs”, where HE has the majority of Americans with him.
Obama does not want the 2014 election to be a referendum on Obamacare, Obamanomics, Obama-spying, Obama-cronyism etc. where REPUBLICANS have the majority.
So I say let’s NOT give Obama his heart’s desire. INSTEAD, let’s elect Republican majorities in both the House and the Senate in 2014. That is the best chance we have to repeal Obamacare.
How big must our majorities BE to override Obama’s threatened veto of repeal? THAT tells you how many seats we have to take. Let’s make our 2014 slogan “END OBAMACARE, VOTE GOP”!
Attempting to repeal Obamacare with only a majority in the House would be a little like trying to win the Battle of Midway without our dive-bombers.
The pilots of our torpedo planes were all brave patriots who did their best — but they died without damaging any Japanese carrier. Not any.
So please.
Let’s not SEEK a battle when we are at half strength and carry defective weapons...
Let’s not SEEK our own defeat...
Ummm, sorry to rain on your parade, but can you tell me ANYTHING the GOP have rescinded/removed/de-funded/abolished/etc. when they HAD the majority?
Was it not the same group that (happily) gave us the Patriot Act (renewal), TSA, NSA, No Child Left Behind, Medicare/caid expansion, Voting Rights Act renewal, amnesty etc. etc. etc.
I fail to see why you still have faith in these Judas
Except, your defeated BEFORE the fight begins if you except defeat before you even attempt to fight.
Most if not all of your [reasons} for not passing a CR that runs the government is supported by conjecture and innuendo, e.g. “And even before that deliberately maximized pain is applied, most American citizens do NOT want a government shutdown:
(a) People who need their Social Security checks dont. (b) Soldiers in Afghanistan whose families struggle to live within their military paychecks dont.
(c) Veterans receiving medical care, dont.
(d) Retirees living on interest from government bonds, dont.
(e) Doctors and nurses who would not be paid, if government medical reimbursements stop, dont.
(f) College students, tornado victimes, (SIC) weather-persons?, judges, prison guards, border patrol, you-name-it, DONT.” supposes they will not receive government support, except those [hand-outs] are already mandated and do not stop when the government shuts down.
Another example of conjecture on your part is:”Second, I want to repeal ALL of Obamacare, as do a majority of Americans. That repeal would have happened ALREADY if Romney had been elected with coattails that also produced a Senate with a Republican majority. But it didn'tt.” If I remember correctly, the mantra from the Romney (Mass. social healthcare architect) campaign was “repeal and REPLACE” except, the majority of Americans do not want Nationalized Health care period! This is why so many Americans stayed home and did not vote at all.
With the majority of Americans behind defunding Obamacare by drafting a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government and NOT providing any funds to implement Obamacare, the only party that would be so called “shutting down the government” would the democrats who would have to vote down the CR in order to deny any law that would defund Obamacare and without the CR, the government could not spend anymore of the tax payers dollars at all.
Giving up before the fight is defeat without firing single shot and your enemy wins. How many times have we heard form the RINO’s: “not this time, this is the wrong time to stand and fight, we must wait till the next time.” Well this is the fourth or fifth “next time” and it is time to stand and fight, kin of like the sequester that Obama through in the mix, never expecting the conservatives to go along with it, except they did, and guess what, the majority of Americans support it! What a shock to the socialist democrats who could not believe the GOP would go along with sequester since it also cut the military, but, they did and it is working because the American people can see right through Obama’s “make it hurt” tactic. The American people will see right through the socialist democrat's play book when they shut down the government and then blame the conservatives for it! Some times you have to allow an infection to come to a head before it will heal, now is the time to stand and fight, not surrender in defeat BEFORE you fight!
I agree. There’s a lot for the GOP’s “leadership” to answer for.
For example, why can’t the GOP have a simple immigration bill?
(1) Build the Southern border fence. ALL of it.
(2) If necessary, build back-up fences with razor wire.
(3) Empower the Border Patrol to arrest and refer
every “illegal” they catch for immediate deportation.
(4) Phase in making English America’s only “official”
language. No more spanish language ballots, for
example.
(5) Increase the number of “legal” guest-workers to favor:
(a) people who speak English
(b) people who bring useful skills to America
(6) Without making any effort to “round-up” ALL
illegals, deport any illegal who is convicted of a
crime.
Still, the Democrats are worse than the GOP and common sense (that great American virtue) tells us:
WE HAVE TO WORK WITH WHAT WE HAVE.
Wishful thinking about “punishing” the GOP may be pleasant, but it will not save America from becoming “Detroit” writ large....
I’ll let JimRob explain it to you in his own inimitable way:

If the Republican Party fails to derail Obamacareless, they’ll be gone, like the Whigs. The public will despise them and rightfully so. At that point there would be no difference between the two parties and instead of Republicans and Dhimmicrats, we’ll have Bolsheviks and Menshiviks.
Screw any republican that does not defund communist health care in the continuing resolution. They are worse than traitors. We will not tolerate that. They will see the wrath of the TEA PARTY and they will not want that. The TEA PARTY is persecuted by the government but WE ARE VERY MUCH ALIVE !
The obamanation of America’s desolation has pulled out the long knives along with the evil half of America to destroy the right wing and destroy God’s blessing on us for blessing Israel, a nation the evil left is trying to destroy by increasing their power through funding the Islamic jihadists through out the middle east and worldwide.
Personally, I believe we are seeing the endtime of America as a power as the communists left and rino right continue to destroy our liberties and our economic prosperity as a Christian influenced nation. The Lord Jesus has used evil nations to curb evil through out history in Israel and Israel will be an orphan nation during the coming 7 year tribulation when God shall separate the wheat from the chaff to bring in His King of Kings as Lord of all the earth in Zion, the city of the great King, for 1000 years.
Why not have the true Republicans request a BINDING, updated, Federal Financial Impact Statement for 2012-2013 for Obamacare?
It should take a month or two to complete, allow for a vote to delay Obamacare for a year, and then show the great financial harm to our Economy that the Statements numbers will document.
Wharton, Stanford, Michigan and Princeton could also file their independent Financial Impact Statements to compare to the Office of Budget and the Congressional Budget Office Financial Impact Statements.
As B. Hussein is fond of saying: We need to get all the facts first.
So how is Putin going to bail Zero out when he gets called on this dare? Coming soon... VodkaCare.
