Israel's largest daily newspaper Yediot Aharonot has a photo of US President Barack Obama published with the comment "From threats to words." In Jerusalem, we are disappointed by Obama's behavior.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued veiled criticism of the White House: "If we do not help ourselves, no one will." According to Netanyahu, the world needs to see: "Anyone who uses weapons of mass destruction, has to pay the price."

If Syria used chemical weapons against its own people, there is no doubt it would do so against Israel. Therefore, America's reluctance to act now is being heavily criticized in the Israeli media, and Israelis are once again realizing they cannot truly rely on America to have their backs.

The Russian initiative to control the Syrian chemical weapons arsenal and to destroy these weapons (in a period of up to ten years!) provided Obama with a way to back down while still saving face. From an American perspective, the hesitation is understandable, after the heavy cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. From the Israeli perspective, the situation is dangerous, because Syria has a common border with the Jewish state.

Obama’s inept nonsense has been a strategic disaster for Israel. Assad’s “ally” Iran has access to forward Syrian locations for mobile short range ballistic missiles. Israel cannot attack Iran’s nuclear facilities without potentially suffering a devastating counterattack. Unless the strategic situation changes, Iran will have its nuclear weapons within a year.

I'm a bit conflicted on the issue of US intervention in Syria's civil war. On one hand I can understand Bibi's desire to see US military intervention in what seems to have originally been an actual revolt by the Syrian people themselves against the monster Assad's cruelly oppressive regime. However, it now appears that the original rebels have been largely supplanted by Islamic terrorist gangs who have their sights set on acquiring Syria to be a part of their own terrorist war against Israel. Also on that hand is that I usually support Bibi's position on most issues involving actual US interests in that critical region as well as on issues affecting Israel's survival as the only democratic nation in that critical area of the globe.

OTOH, I'm not at all anxious to see the patriotic men and women of our armed forces become involved in any more seemingly futile military adventures that have little or no impact on our own national security, hence my conflicted position on this difficult issue. One thing on which I think most of us on this forum can agree is that Obama is almost totally ignorant concerning military matters, and is by any measure the most ineffective president who has ever been inflicted on the American people by a deliberately dumbed-down electorate.

Good points Phil. I am familiar with all of them but am constantly surprised at how many posters aren’t, or who still post erroneous information. But everyone doesn’t do as much reading or fact checking on Google.
