Confronted by an agitated man who at one point lay down in the middle of a crowded intersection in Times Square, two police officers fired shots late Saturday evening at the man, striking two bystanders instead, the police said.

Cops are the worst shots in the universe. At our gun range the only accidental discharges are always cops. Everytime Mr. GG2 shoots they all converge on his target wanting to know what agency he’s with. They all think he’s FBI. Its hysterical. Sad but hysterical.
They should load no more than 7 rounds in their 10 round magazines.
When I was a kid we used to idolize cops - we thought they were all like Dick Tracy and Eliot Ness.
My best friend's dad was a Sheriff's deputy and also taught the local youth NRA program. Plus he was a Boy Scout leader, a crack shot and one of the best hunters I have ever met.
We were fortunate to have men like that as role models.
If we had known cops like the two in this story we wouldn't have been able to sleep at night.
Do not think for one minute that these officers will not obey Obama when he tells them to confiscate your guns. Most of these SWAT team members are gun nuts themselves who get all fired up on adrenaline when they get to wear their wannabee military gear.
My comment was meant in the context, that a frightened person will kill you, Police Officer or not. We never know the courage of any one officer until that courage is tested. It is that courage that separates a great cop, from a frightened one who shoots before necessary. In the case of this article IMO the Officer was tested and found lacking.
the account sounds like an attempt at “suicide by police-fire” - a person wanting the police to shoot them
Very few times it is necessary for an officer to shoot an unarmed man or a man with a club or knife.
There are so many non-lethal weapons that can instantly bring down a person and make’em scream and cry for mama.
Cops do not even need to get close to a person. Pepper spray canisters with twenty five foot range, gas canisters for confined spaces, bean bag shotgun rounds, tasers.
I realize there are situations where it is necessary to use your weapon and folks get killed. You should not run or attempt to resist arrest...at all. When a cop tells you to drop whatever you have, you should do it.
With that said, cops have so many options and should not take a life unless it's absolutely necessary to save a life. When a person's on the ground, handcuffed, cops should not pile on top and pummel them or kick them regardless of what they've done.
This is the type of stuff we see out of third world countries or the Soviet Union.

Yes Mr. GG2’s dad was a sheriff’s deputy and a good one.
The owner of a range I used to frequent years ago allowed the local police to shoot there for free. I couldn't believe how bad most of them were. I saw entire 15 round magazines emptied while barely hitting paper.
Takes me back to a better time.
When we kids saw a Sheriff or cop walk into the local coffee shop we would congregate by him and hope he would notice us so we could ask questions.
Mostly about his patrol car or pistol.
Most of the youth today run in the other direction.
The average cop, highway patrol, FBI agent, is only slightly below the average of the populace at large when it comes to handling a handgun. If they are shooting enthusiasts, they can shoot, if not, they are about on a par with my 10 year old grandson, who is a pretty fair shooter.
